You meant to be legitimate in your practice of the illusory arts. You really did. But the avenues for an illusionist, even one as talented as you, are limited. Most adventuring parties want spellcasters whose spells have some "substance" to them. The established traveling troupes already have their proven acts. The nobles who hire female illusionists want them practicing their illusions in the bedroom as much as they practice them in the throne room.
There's academia, but the infighting for those jobs are as fierce as the compensation is low.
Which is how you fell in with the thieves' guild. Illusionist spells are perfect for aiding a heist. Even places that have wards against magic are geared toward spells with "substance." And wards that will detect wizard level invisibility spells tend to be useless against the superior invisibility spell cast by an illusionist.
