Since the early 1960's release of Spacewars!, the video game industry has grown into the one of the world's central form entertainment behind broadcast and cable TV. In the 1980's, the video game industry boomed with the release of arcade video games such as PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros., and Street Fighter, to name a few.
In the 1990's, the industry expanded further not only with the release of video game consoles (such as the Nintendo hardware systems and the Sony PlayStation consoles), but with the release of video games with early 3-D graphics. Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country were among the earliest examples. The early 2000's saw the rise of revolutionary gameplay, such as double-screen handheld consoles, motion controls, mobile gaming, and a console switching from docking at the television to a handheld console.
During the expansion of the video game industry, many influential video game companies have made their mark in the industry, more prominently Nintendo, SEGA, Capcom, and Square Enix, each of them being well-known for their influential game franchises.
