It has been a year and a half since Oliver was first admitted to the Sunshine Smile Orphanage for Girls. A year and three quarters since his mother died and was taken in by the friendly caretaker of the orphanage. Not that there was anything wrong with the orphanage. The tiny-born boy liked it there. Miss McCormick has been very kind to him, and so have the girls living there, but he didn’t want to stay there forever. He missed his mom terribly, and he wanted to have a new family with a mom who loved him unconditionally like his mom did.
At this time, it was the third Adoption Day since Oliver had been brought to the orphanage, and every time, it was the same thing: He’d watch helplessly as all the fortunate girls get accepted by a new family and leave the orphanage for good. Then he’d wait until the next Adoption Day at the orphanage six months later.
Poor Oliver watched the girls he befriended and grew up with leave him behind, all alone and brooding. He wanted to go with the girls so badly, but Valerie had the eyes of a hawk when it came to him. She’d know when a girl was trying to smuggle him out and intervened before they succeeded. Still, at least they kissed him goodbye, but it didn’t make the pain of loneliness go away.
Three Adoption Days, and Oliver still hadn’t had a family come to him. Nearly all of the girls he knew were gone and he couldn’t see them again. He began to realize the futility of finding a family. The loneliness began to eat away at him, so he kept himself alone and away from everyone else. He mostly kept to his room, curled up in his bed in his dollhouse, and that’s where he stayed for the past week.
One day after the first week, Oliver laid in his bed, facing the wall and brooding over the possibility of not being adopted. Valerie watched the tiny boy from the doorframe and a saddened frown spread across her face. She gently hugged little Oliver with her giant pudgy fingers curled around his tiny frame and gently massaged his head with her thumb.
“Oliver? Are you okay, honey?” she asked.
Oliver shook his head. “No. Everyone I love is already going away to a new family and I won’t have a family to live with. A real family.” He felt the urge to sob rising in his chest. “I don’t wanna be alone! I wanna have a new mommy who loves my like my mommy did!”
“Oh, sweetie.” Valerie scooped up the tiny boy in his palm and cradled him against her gigantic breasts. Filtered through her organs, muscles, and skin, her muffled heartbeat brought the tiny boy some comfort as he sniffled and sobbed. “I’m sorry you feel this way, but you don’t have to worry anymore because I have some good news for you: You’re gonna find a new family today.”
Instantly, the boy’s sadness melted and lifted brightly on his young features. “Really!?”
“Yes. They heard about you and your condition, so they already filled out the paperwork and they’re ready to meet you.”
For the first time in a year, Oliver felt genuine hope for his future. Valerie cradled the tiny boy against her breasts as she made her way down to the meeting room where a certain woman waited for them. This particular woman was…
