Chapter #9

Colin

“I don’t care what you say, I’m not doing it,” Colin said, turning to walk away.

“Really?” Talo said with fake surprise. “That’s a real shame because I thought I heard you say you volunteered!”

Before Colin could say anything, Talo shoved the Golden Cucco in Colin’s arms and then pushed him over the edge of the abyss. As the frightened boy fell, the Golden Cucco’s flight instincts took over and frantically clapped its wings, carrying the young human over the edge and towards the entrance to the Sacred Grove. While Colin rolled the landing on the entrance, the Golden Cucco crowed and flew away out of sight.

While Colin recovered from the landing, he heard Talo laughing from the other side. “Nice landing! Hey, since there’s no way for you get back this way, looks like the only way to get back is to go through the grove!”

“Guys, this isn’t funny!” Colin cried. “I could’ve died back there!”

“But you didn’t, so you don’t have that to worry about!” Talo called back. “Hey, while you’re in there, maybe you have that monster hexer tell you how Link was able to make it out of there in one piece! Come on, Malo, let’s see if his dad can tell us how Link escaped the grove the first time.”

“You couldn’t have made a bridge for him to cross?” Malo muttered to Colin as he and his brother both walked away, leaving a scared Colin behind.

“Talo! Malo! Wait, don’t leave me!” Colin called out, but was met with deaf ears. When the boys disappeared from sight, Colin turned to face that dark, hollow opening into the sacred part of the woods, swallowing a nervous lump. “Well, I guess I have no other choice.”

One shaky foot moved in front of the other as Colin walked into the entrance, disappearing through the dark.

After making it through that hollow entrance, Colin emerged on the other side and into a completely different forested area altogether. It was strange. It was calm, yet it was also sad. There was a song to this place that he didn’t recognize, but it felt so lonely, like the song was for someone who passed from this world long, long ago.

A little mischievous chortle rang out through the isolated woods, making Colin jump.

“H-Hello?” Colin called out, his voice quivering in fear. “Is someone here?”

The chuckles got louder, echoing through the woods like an impish spirit.

As Colin looked around, he saw something... or someone... fall from the trees, which greatly frightened him. It looked human-like, but it wore strange rags, a pointed hat, a strange smiling mask, and it carried around a lantern and a multiple horned trumpet.

“I scared you!” the imp said, cracking up with laughter.

“What are you!?” Colin screamed.

“I’m your new friend,” the imp said. “It’s been so lonely since the guy in green last visited these neck of the woods, but lo and behold, you come along and now I have someone new to play with!”

“Guy in green? Do you mean Link?” Colin inquired.

“If that’s the guy in green’s name, then it has to be.” The imp to addled over time the nervous boy, took a couple of deep whiffs, and chuckled, his every movement creaking like wood. “Hehehe. You have his smell on you. You’re definitely his friend. Hey, do you wanna play hide-and-seek?”

“N-No!” Colin almost squealed. “My dad says you’re a creature who hexes anyone who crosses your path! He says it’s not safe to be here!”

“Bah! Adults say that stuff to kids because they’re no fun!” scoffed the imp. “Hey, wait a minute! If your dad really says I’m dangerous, then how come you’re here, hmmm?”

“I didn’t choose to be here!” Colin snapped, feeling ashamed the next second. “The truth is, my friends tricked me into coming here and now I can’t get back. The reason I had to hang around them is because everyone else is busy with their own stuff and I was feeling lonely.”

“Awww, that stinks. Those boys don’t sound like true friends after all,” the imp said. “I know, I can use my magic trumpet to send you out of here and to someone who’d want to play with you!”

Colin was suddenly filled with hope. “Really!? You mean it!?”

“Yep, although the price of this is that my magic grants your desire in a literal sense,” the imp warned the boy, “so since you wanted someone to play with you, then my magic will change your appearance. Maybe it will shrink you or turn you into a toy, or..”

“I don’t care if I turn into a bug! I wanna get out of this scary place!” Colin snapped.

“Hey, it’s not so scary once you get used to it,” the imp said, taking notice of Colin’s desperately growing impatience and sighing. “Fine, I’ll do it, but remember, this what you wanted, and what you want is what you get.”

The imp blew on his trumpet, and suddenly, a strange magical wind engulfed the blonde boy’s body, making him disappear like the wind.

The next moment later, the strange whirlwind blew through, and Colin reappeared in another part of the world. His eyes closed for the duration, Colin opened them and inspected his hands, his body, and touched his face. He checked a little puddle on the floor, and in its reflection, he saw his young face was intact as well.

Except, something was off. He could tell what it was at first, but...

“What’s this?” a booming voice resounded in a loud echo.

All of a sudden, Colin felt the floor tremble with systematically growing tremors, and each one, he noted, they felt like footsteps. When he looked around, he saw a giant feminine face staring back at him. Colin screamed; this was what that imp tried to warn him about! He wanted to be played with out of sheer loneliness and he was the size of a small doll, small enough to be played with by this giant girl!

And this was no ordinary girl...

Who was this giant girl that spotted Colin?
