Chapter #7

Hilda

by: The Grand One Author IconMail Icon
The magical world of Hilda has all sorts of possibilities for encounters with tiny people. Let’s explore a few.

Tiny Elf: First of all, we can follow Alphur. All elves are only a few inches tall, and at the age of ten, he’s considered a legal adult by elf society. That means he’s fully prepared to go out into the world and make something of himself, not to mention to write up all the paperwork. Elves love paperwork, and Alphur is positively giddy to write reports unlike any his people have ever seen. He’s decided to travel with Hilda into the human city of Trollberg and record their many life-threatening adventures.

Shrunken David: There are plenty of things we can do with David, the shy little boy who always gets dragged around by his friends, Hilda and Frida, for one reason or another. For one thing, an unfortunate magical encounter has left the little boy even littler. He’s frightened, senseless, and doesn’t know what to do. Luckily, he’s got friends with warped notions of self-preservation and personal boundaries who are willing to do what it takes to get him back to normal and look after him in the meantime. They’re all eleven, so this goes about as well as one can expect.

Borrower David: David was born tiny, as what’s known as a borrower. There aren’t too many borrowers in Trollberg, but they have a don’t-ask-don’t-tell agreement with the humans. The borrowers agree to stay out of the way and never take anything valuable, only what they need to sustain themselves. And in exchange, the humans agree to ignore and not mess with any borrowers careless enough to be seen. However, borrowers have no official rights within the town, so if one is caught, there’s not much anyone can do about it. One day, David was carelessly distracted by a rock, and he was seen. Perhaps the good witch Kaisa decides to keep him as a pet and companion. Maybe Hilda and/or Frida don’t want to keep him, but they invite him to join in their adventures as friends. Maybe one of the lonely ladies around town just wants to borrow his time for a little bit. Maybe someone with less wholesome intentions gets ahold of him. Curious?

Hilda’s Little Twin: Kurt is Hilda’s twin, but she likes to call him her little brother because he’s shorter than her finger. No one knows why some people are born so small. It’s a rare affliction with no known treatment, but it comes with a few perks, such as greater durability, strength, and stamina. Growing up in a cabin in the woods, Kurt was elated to join Hilda to explore the wilderness. He’d often ride on her shoulder or the back of Twig, a deer fox cub. All three got up to all sorts of trouble, only to return home to rest with their mother, Johanna. Then, one day, when giants weren’t watching their step, the family’s home was crushed, forcing them to move to Trollberg, where some people aren’t as friendly as he’s used to.
