Chapter #3

The new employee

    by: sdaze Author IconMail Icon
Emma was sitting in the manager's office alone when there was an unexpected knock at the door. It was currently unlocked and she couldn't be bothered getting up, so she just shouted "Come in!".

A stranger entered the small room, closing the door behind themselves. They were indeed a stranger, Emma had never seen this person before in her life. If she had she was sure she would have remembered. The woman, Emma assumed it was a woman, her androgynous figure made it difficult to tell for sure, walked towards the desk.

Emma visually assessed her as she approached. She was young and petite, perhaps even slightly smaller than both Kiran and Allie. She had little in the way of curves. This was easy to discern as she was dressed so oddly. Her clothing consisted of a small tight crop top and hot pants. Both were dark green in colour and covered in tiny sequins that reflected the light in a myriad of different ways as she walked. On her feet were a pair of slipper like shoes a similar colour to the rest of her clothes.

Basically, an outfit that left very little to the imagination. As sexy an outfit as it was, Emma couldn't see much in the way of breasts pressing against the top and her hips and bum were somewhat narrow, almost masculine looking.

Her most feminine feature was her head. A long mane of dark green hair fell over her shoulders unrestrained and her delicate features were made up in various tints of muted greens. As she finally reached the desk, Emma became aware of her bright green irises which stood out from the rest of her eyes.

"Can I help you? Are you lost?" Emma asked as the creature in front of her smiled.

"I'm here about the position," she said in a voice Emma thought was far too loud for such a tiny body.

"You must have made a mistake luv, we're not taking on anyone new at the moment." She said, wondering how she'd found her way up here.

"I think I can change your mind Emma," the green themed woman told her.

Emma was two seconds away from calling the security guard Caleb but something intrigued her about this very unusual person. "Err, well you know my name," she said, hinting rather obviously.

"Oh, how rude of me. You can call me Deus," she said.

"Juice?" Emma asked, not sure she'd heard her correctly.

"Deus," Deus repeated, "D-E-U-S."

"Ah, Deus, how unusual," Emma remarked.

"It serves its purpose," she said cryptically.

Not quite sure how to proceed with the conversation, Emma decided to carry on as if it was an actual interview. "Do you have a CV?"

"Of course, it's not very up to date though," she said as she put her hand behind her back. From nowhere she pulled out a scroll of faded yellow paper with a strip of leather holding it together. She put it on Emma's desk.

"What a clever idea," Emma said as she picked up the scroll and unfastened it, "it looks really old."

"Yes, it does," Deus agreed.

Emma unfurled the page and looked at it. The dark brown characters were hand written in some weird language she couldn't understand. She ran her finger under the first line and felt a charge of static electricity. Automatically her eyes started scanning the text from left to right. Her mind filled with all sorts of weird images, green fire, people screaming, giant monsters, feelings of pure terror. She lifted her eyes away from the words and the visions suddenly stopped. She looked at Deus. "I'm sorry luv, I can only read English," she said a little apologetically.

Deus shrugged, "Do you wish to ask me questions?" she suggested as an alternative.

"Do you have any experience working in retail?" Emma asked, starting a standard script she had long ago memorised.

Deus thought briefly. "I once sold the heart of a hell beast to the fourth lord of chaos in return for five hundred mortal souls," she said. Emma stared at her. "I jest, I have not," she admitted.

Emma was used to applicants who used humour to cover their deficiencies. "And why would you like to work here?" She asked.

"After many millennia, my numerous adventures while exciting in a way barely comprehensible to a mortal soul such as yours, grew tiresome. I found myself seeking a mundane normal existence," she said with a somewhat dramatic emphasis.

"So you got bored in your last job?" Emma asked.

"That is one way of putting it," Deus said as a look of despair passed her face as an eternity of memories passed through her mind.

Emma tilted her head sympathetically, "Look I can see you are keen but to justify taking you on, I'll need something else. Do you have any transferable skills?"

"I have power which I can direct in countless ways beyond your imagination," Deus stated.

Emma's face contorted slightly, "I was looking for something a little more specific than that," she said.

"Perhaps, a demonstration will help change your mind?" Deus asked.

"Perhaps."

"So be it," Deus said her voice dropping an octave. Emma noticed the colour of Deus's eyes changed slightly before returning to normal.

Emma felt her skin tingle slightly. She looked on expectantly. "Well?"

"It is done," Deus said spotting the look of confusion on Emma's face, "Do you have a looking glass, I mean a mirror?"

Emma retrieved her make up mirror from her handbag. Her muscle memory made her look at her reflection. Her expression changed to one of shock. Not believing what she saw there, she brought her hand to her face to confirm it. She looked young. She noticed how smooth the skin was on her hand as she pulled it away. Somehow Deus had just removed the effects of the passing of the last twenty years from her body.

Slowly Emma put the mirror down. It was clear Deus was no regular human being. Emma gulped, "What are you?" She asked Deus.

"An interesting question," Deus said as she chuckled. Her eyes turned black, "Maybe I'm a demon," then they changed to red, "or the devil himself," a thousand points of light, "an alien," the irises became grey and swirling, "a genie," they returned to a circular shape but became bright amber, "a spirit of nature?" Her eyes finally returned to normal. "I could be none of those things or all of them," she said before she smiled, "It matters not. If I understand the laws of this society you cannot treat me any differently than anyone else when it comes to employing me."

Emma stared in disbelief. She couldn't believe a being with this sort of power was pulling the anti-discrimination card to justify getting a job in store. "What do you want?" she asked.

"I think I've made that clear. A job and a quiet life. You'll have my powers at your disposal. I might have a little fun with them too," Deus said cheerily.

"Sounds too good to be true," Emma told her.

"Be aware Emma, my powers although varied are not without limits. Also I won't do anything to seriously jeopardise my new life. There are many beings out there who have scores to settle with me. If I use my powers completely unfettered it will bring their attention to this realm," she shook her head, "And trust me when I say, you don't want that."

Emma pondered her words for a few seconds, "Under normal circumstances I'd conclude the interview and consider your application but this is pretty far from normal." As frightened as Emma was by Deus's abilities, she knew it was too good an opportunity to miss. "It's my turn to set conditions. You don't want to be discriminated against, that's fine. You'll get treated like any other employee. No special treatment, I expect you to turn up on time and do the tasks assigned," she said in a firm tone.

"Very well, that is fair."

"In that case I just want to say, welcome to Wilko," Emma said before outstretching her hand.

Deus took it and smiled. "I must say this will be an interesting new experience for me. I'm actually looking forward to it," she said as she shook Emma's hand.

Emma let go gently. "First things first," she said as she pointed between Deus's top and hot pants, at her bare slim stomach, "We have a staff dress code."

"Of course Emma," she said in a slightly submissive tone. Her whole being shimmered. When it stopped, she was dressed in a Wilko polo and a pair of black trousers. Her make up became more conventional in colour. Emma noted her eye shade seemed more muted now. Her long hair had turned black and was in a ponytail. Emma could still see dark green though as the light hit it.

"That's a good start, you've saved me allocating a uniform budget. I'll get Liz to sort out your paperwork later," Emma said, not entirely sure how to do that for a supernatural being. She was sure Liz would figure it out. "I'll call Natalie up and she can show you the essentials," she said as she picked up the phone.

Deus smiled as she anticipated enjoying a normal life for a change.
