Connie...Connie was a gift to Pearl from Rose. She is the only human Pearl particularly likes, to the point she's the only one Pearl has ever absorbed to keep them around permanently. Obviously, this is a great honor...
And its...a lot of responsibility. Connie awoke in Rosetemple, a city of humans in the temple of the Crystal Gems, where Rose keeps her humans...and where, by extension, Pearl had Connie be when she didn't need her directly. Changing into her uniform, she enters the Pearl palace, a grand structure in the middle of the city, passing humans in ornate theater masks, and walking into a room with an ornate round table, stained glass windows depicting battles from the past, many of them featuring Connie herself, lit the room. She was the first one here, as usual.
One of the first things Connie did when she was shown the maginificent city she now resided in, which was some centuries ago, was begin the Pearl Paladins, servants and soldiers in the service of Pearl and the Mother Goddess Rose...
Granted, that was...technically before she learned the Gems are not technically gods, but lets be honest, they are immortal, huge, powerful beings. They may as well be.
Anyway the order's masks were a request of Pearls, she didn't particularly like humans, even the Civilized ones her love kept, and it was easier for her to pretend it was just tiny gems she was ordering around when she lead them in battles then if they didn't. Of course with...how long its been and how quickly normal humans die, the masks have been mythologized into some kind of status sym...
...God, how long has she been alive? Might...might need to have a conversation about that with pearl later...
