Chapter #13

Pretend to be Dylan

    by: Seuzz Author IconMail Icon
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Caleb asks bluntly.

"I came down to check on things, see how they were going. You got my mask done yet?"

He takes it out of his backpack. "I didn't see your car out front."

"Your friend picked me up," you say, thinking quickly. "He brought me the mask of that girl for tonight. You know, so I could have a night out with the boys again." You grin at him. "Did you have fun reliving my adventures with her?"

Caleb just gives you a look. "So where's Will?"

"Had to run back over to his place."

"His truck's still here."

"I said he ran back over, didn't I?" you sigh.

"Don't pull that shit on me," he tells you bluntly. For a moment your heart skips—has he seen through the disguise? "That clever passive-aggressive attitude gets real thin real fast. Will's already sick of it, I can tell."

You start to say something cutting back, but stop yourself. You must be doing a good imitation. You catch your reflection in the mirror, and wince to remember that you're still wearing your own clothes. If Caleb notices ...

"How about you go over and pick him up," you suggest. "I want to get this shit back to my place. Does he live far away?"

"Half a mile, I guess." Caleb shrugs. He turns to go, but pauses in the door. His glance back is a little odd, as though he's trying to remember something, but he gives up and leaves.

The instant he's gone you start pacing in a tight, fast circle, trying to think. You just wanted to get him away, and you have no idea what to do next. He'll soon find you're not at home, and then ...

You need a decoy ...

Of course! The golem!

Hardly pausing to think things through to the next stage, you tear off the Dylan mask and are about to slap it onto the golem when you realize you don't have any clothes for it. You chew your lip. Inspiration, when it comes, arrives with flop sweat. You jam Caleb's newly made mask to your own face, fighting to remain conscious. You don't succeed, but when you open your eyes you do feel like you've not been passed out long. You put drop the new mask of yourself onto the golem and return Dylan's mask to your own face. The golem is staring at you skeptically when you wake again. "You are so fucked," it says dryly.

"So are you, asshole," you retort. "Get dressed. Not these, you retard," you yell, slapping its hands from your shirt. "The gym clothes in my bag." Thank God you chose today as your semi-annual washing day for them.

It's just finished changing when Caleb walks back in. "There you are!" he exclaims. "I've been driving up and down trying to find you."

"He got back just after you left," you say. "I couldn't find my cell phone or I'd have called you."

"Where's your phone," Caleb asks the golem who is pretending to be you.

It's in your back pocket, actually, and the golem looks at you. "Yeah, where's your cell phone, Prescott," you ask him impatiently.

It looks from you to Caleb and back, and turns very red. "Fuck you guys," it says. "Go fuck each other. You're totally gay for each other anyway." It pushes angrily past Caleb, pulling away from his grasp and going out the door.

"Must be that time of the month," you smirk.

Caleb punches you in the mouth—not hard enough to push you back, but hard enough to smart badly—and glares at you.

You seize on this, the perfect chance to make a breach between Caleb and his cousin. "You know what, you and your lame little buddy can fuck off," you say. "I was going to help you guys. Get you a couple of rich frat boys you could replace—get you money, looks, muscles, all the good stuff you two are so desperately missing. Help you take over their lives." Caleb looks startled. "But you know what, you can just try to do it without me. Keep your golem and your book. I'll be keeping those masks you made for me, though. Replace one of those fratboys myself. And don't try calling me to say you're sorry, dipshit, because your apologies aren't wanted." You brush past him haughtily and follow your golem out the door.

It's lurking near your truck, hands in its pockets. "Get his phone away from him," you mutter to it as you brush past. "Make sure he can't send or get any calls." The golem nods. "Pick me up at the laundromat on Hausmann when you get away from him." You stalk off down the street.

Luckily—or unluckily as the case may be—Dylan has a devious and unscrupulous mind, so as you walk toward your rendezvous point it's not hard to come up with a couple of plans to keep him away from Caleb for the next few days. Not all are easy or foolproof. The easiest course would be to just call and tell him something went wrong with the new mask, and to put off the handover until the following weekend. But Dylan would probably call anyway to pester Caleb for updates.

Almost certainly Dylan will be out for the evening, and as "Eva" he won't be taking any of his ID with him. With his mask, it would be quite easy for you to break into his apartment, steal all his plastic, and sabotage his life. Disconnect his power and phone service, shut down his utilities, drain his bank account, maybe even commit a few minor crimes as part of a frame-up to get him out of the way.

The last possibility is to get him out of the way on a pleasure trip of some kind with one of his fuckbuddies—Kevin Miller, perhaps. You'd have to go over to Kevin's place and pretend to be in a frisky mood; spend the night; talk him into skipping school and taking a road trip. It would be a tricky moment when Kevin went to see the real Dylan the next day, but if you called Dylan with bad news about the mask, he might just ignore the weirder aspects of Kevin's approach and go off.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Get Dylan out of the way.

*Noteb*
2. Gamble on Dylan staying quiet on his own.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
