A few days later, after a particularly uneventful and mind-numbingly boring shift, Fred was clocking out. He was thinking about going to talk to Hank while he worked a bit, as the two had hit it off and become fast friends as some of the only humans around, when suddenly he got a text from his sister.
Come home right after work. It's important. Abby had written. He was honestly shocked by the serious tone of it and immediately obliged her demand, leaving and going straight home, mind racing about what it could have been. Was it some sort of trouble? It was hard to judge by what she'd written, and she wasn't texting anything else after he shot back that he was on his way.
Soon enough, he was at the apartment building and approaching their shared home, when another text came from her right as he was almost at the door.
Brace yourself. There's someone here who wants to meet you. Abby wrote. Fred's heart skipped a beat. Was this it? Was he going to meet who he thought he was going to meet? Could he handle that, right now? How would he react? How would she react? It had been so long, he didn't know what to feel!
Taking a deep breath, he tried to steel his nerves and unlocked the door, slowly coming inside. As soon as he was in view, he heard a voice say, "Hello, my little Freddy Bear!" in the sweetest tone. He froze, emotion welling up. There was only one person who had ever called him that in such a way.
With a shaking voice, he responded, "Mom?" before finally looking towards the source. What was his mother?
