Haley parked her car and turned off the ignition. After unbuckling her seatbelt, she looked out her windshield and took in the sight before her. She was somewhere she hadn’t considered going to in a long time, the thought of such a torture palace sending a chill down her spine.
It was a Saturday; how the hell had she found herself at the gym of all places? And at noon?!? If it was up to her, she’d be sleeping in for another hour!
Well, it wasn’t up to her; she’d called Courtney to (once again) try to make amends after Courtney had snapped yet another bra and blamed her for ‘making her fat’, whatever that meant. Suggesting a meetup at Big Daddy’s hadn’t made things better, either.
The only reason she was here at this stupid gym was because Courtney refused to hang out with her unless she joined her for a little ‘workout sesh’. “C’mon, Haley, it’ll be fun! We’ll start slow, we can try the treadmill, some of the machines, maybe even a little of yoga if we’re feeling up to it!”
Haley doubted she’d be “up to it”. Or any of it, for that matter. What was wrong with Big Daddy’s? They had salads, didn’t they? Why the hell did she have to drag her into her stupid health kick?
Whatever, if this is what it took to get her best friend back, she’d at least try. Just this once, mind you; Haley was not going to let Courtney make this a thing. Anyway, Courtney’d offered to pay for her one-day pass, so she didn’t really have any other excuses.
Other than, y’know…it was the fucking gym.
Haley pulled out a big, fluffy waffle from the paper bag on her passenger’s seat and took a big bite. Another few bites and she’d devoured the whole thing, and she poured the contents of a syrup packet down her throat to chase it down. She needed this if she was gonna be putting herself through hell, and it was brunch time, so a trip to Waffle House had seemed to be well deserved.
After devouring two hash brown patties, she chased them with a swig of Big Daddy’s chocolate milkshake. She’d gotten one for Courtney too, but she’d realized too late that her hip spilled over one of her two cup holders, so she’d had no choice but to chug it right there in the Big Daddy’s parking lot. Of course, that called for something savory, so she just had to grab some cheese fries to balance it out. She’d meant to save some for Courtney, but…what she didn’t know couldn’t hurt her, right?
Suddenly, Haley’s phone rang. She looked at the screen, and saw that Courtney was calling. She quickly swallowed her mouthful of her chocolate drink before answering.
“Hey, what’s up, Courtney?”
“Where are you? I’ve been waiting a half hour!”
Haley and Courtney had planned to meet at eleven thirty, but Haley’s pit stops to Big Daddy’s and Waffle House had apparently delayed her about a half hour. What was the rush anyway? It’s not like Courtney had much to do these days; despite some enthusiastic job-hunting, she was just as jobless as Haley.
“Sorry, I’m almost there, hitting all the lights, bad traffic, the works. Should be there in about…” She glanced over to her remaining pile of greasy breakfast sandwiches and what was left of her shake. “…five minutes?”
“*Sigh*…alright, just hurry up, okay? I’m getting a lot of weird looks just sitting here in the lobby.”
“‘Kay, see ya soon!”
Haley hung up, and immediately got to work.

Twenty minutes later, Haley pushed herself through the front door, bloated and exhausted from the short walk from her car to the gym entrance. She didn’t have any traditional workout clothes (nothing that would even come close to fitting, anyway), so she was stuck wearing a black t-shirt, the Rolling Stones logo stretched across her relatively smaller chest. She was very used to wearing sweatpants around the house, so she’d stuck with that. Her waistband was digging into her belly; she’d opted to tuck her bottom belly roll into her spandex, but was regretting doing so, her heavy meal taking up a substantial amount of space inside her gut.
She glanced around, though it wasn’t hard to spot Courtney. Even if the lobby wasn’t almost completely empty, she would’ve stuck out big time. She clearly hadn’t lost any weight since the last time they’d seen each other a few weeks prior, not that she was likely to do so in such a short amount of time. She was still a boob-heavy fatty with a ballooning belly to match, though it looked like she was at least taking this attempt at exercise more seriously than Haley; she was clad in what looked to be a brand-new outfit, complete with a grey tank top, black leggings, and some neon pink running shoes. This look did nothing to hid just how big Courtney was; while not as massive as Haley, she was still plenty fat.
“Hey, Courtney, sorry I’m late. Nice getup.”
Courtney was currently trying in vain to touch her toes, stretching in anticipation of their workout, though her melons were making this extremely difficult. Too big for any sports bra, her boobs pushed out from the top and the sides of her custom-order padded bra, and rested on top of her wobbling stomach, a large dome that jutted out in front of her. Custom-ordered bras did NOT come cheap, and she was determined to lose enough weight to properly fit into this one.
Having failed miserably to touch her toes, Courtney lifted herself back up, and scowled at Haley. “What the hell, Haley! It’s been almost an hour! I was about to head in without you!”
Oh, how Haley wished it would be just that easy, but her guilt overtook her. “I’m sorry! I know I’ve been kind of a shitty friend lately, alright?” Tears began to form in her eyes. “I didn’t like the way we left things, so if this is gonna make things better, I’m gonna give it a shot, ok?”
Courtney could tell that Haley was genuinely trying to make things right. Sure, she was the biggest glutton she knew, and her bad habits had been rubbing off on her for a while…but she was still her best friend. Honestly, just seeing Haley step foot into a gym was proof enough that she cared about their friendship. She was close to tearing up herself!
“It’s ok, Haley, I forgive you.” She waddled over to Haley and attempted to give her hug, their bulging bellies making it impossible for them to completely wrap their arms around each others’ plush bodies.
Haley broke their embrace. “You do?” Haley asked. “Does that mean we don’t have to-“
“No, Haley, you still have to work out with me. You promised, remember?”
“Ugh, fiiiine, whatever. Let’s just get it over with, alright? Lead the way”
“Yay! You won’t regret this, Haley!” Courtney made her way over to the counter to buy their day passes.
As she waddled after her friend, Haley had a sinking feeling that she absolutely would regret this.
