Chapter #27

Meeting Mack in the Mall

    by: Mrphoenix Author IconMail Icon
The sisters made their way through the tables of the food court, Haley having some difficulty as the breadth of her hips caused her to bump into tables and chairs, and even a few strangers as she waddled through the crowd. As they got closer, they noticed that Mackenzie wasn’t alone. Hidden behind Mackenzie’s girth was a chubby little girl, munching on a bag of sliced apples and tapping on a cell phone. Mackenzie looked up and noticed the sisters approaching, and heaved herself up out of a pair of seats.

“Haley!” She pulled Haley into a bear hug, their bellies and boobs smushing together and preventing them from reaching all the way around each other. “Tara, long time no see!” She gave Tara a similar embrace, her fat enveloping the much smaller Tara, who settled on patting Mack’s back in response. Mack pulled back and noticed the girls’ bags. “Clothes run? Same, both for me and Tiffany here.” She gestured to her daughter, who glanced up for only a moment before focusing her attention back to the phone in her hand. “Tiffany, this is Haley and Tara. Say hello.” Tiffany ignored her mom, consumed with the game she was playing.

Mackenzie frowned. “Tiffany, say hi to mommy’s friends. Don’t make me take my phone back.”

Tiffany sighed, glanced up again, and gave a curt “Hi.” before resuming her game.

“Thank you, Tiffany.” Mackenzie sat back down onto her chairs with a heavy *thud*. “Sorry, she’s a little grumpy ever since I put her on a D-I-E-T.”

“I can spell, mommy.” Tiffany didn’t look up from her mom’s phone, and continued wolfing down her healthy snack.

Mack rolled her eyes. “Her doctor’s convinced she’s overweight, not that I’m surprised. I’m not exactly the best role model.” She patted the sides of her barrel-sized belly, pushing out to her mid-thigh, fully contained by a brand new-looking gray hoodie. “You guys hungry? I’m starving.”

Haley and Mack grabbed their grub while Tara waited at the table, keeping an eye of Tiffany. Ten minutes later, Haley and Tara were sitting at Mackenzie’s table, and despite Tara’s protests, Haley had not split the fifty dollars their mom had given them, or at least not evenly. Tara was pretty pissed when her sister had returned to the table with two trays of Panda Express, McDonald’s, and a stack of Cinnabons, with a measly five dollars left over. Tara settled on two slices of Sbarro, with an accompanying drink and side of breadsticks coming out of her own measly savings.

As she watched her sister and her fat friend gorge, Tara couldn’t help but notice just how close they were weight-wise. Obviously, their proportions were very different, with Mack’s giant gut dominating her figure while her sister’s titanic tush spread wide over her own pair of chairs, but side-by-side, they did look pretty close in size. Tara guessed Mack was probably slightly heavier, maybe ten or twenty-ish pounds, but at the rate she was eating, Haley likely wasn’t that far behind. Seeing her sister absolutely demolishing almost fifty dollars worth of greasy, sugary, absolutely fattening fast food was both impressive and a bit frightening.

Mackenzie was no slouch, but she’d ordered much less than her fat friend, just a few McDonald’s combos and a Happy Meal toy for Tiffany. Every now and then, she’d catch Tiffany try to sneak a fry from her tray, and swat her away, before stuffing a handful of fries into her own mouth.

Tara wasn’t quite as ferocious an eater as the other two fatties, but she didn’t take long to demolish her own carb-loaded meal. She leaned back into her chair, sipping her soda to wash everything down.

Mackenzie finished not long after her, and sat back, patting the top of her stuffed stomach in satisfaction. Haley was still busy chowing down, so Mack turned her attention to Tara. “So, Tara, how’s life been? What’re you up to these days?”

Tara felt awkward, trying to answer Mack’s question without arousing suspicion. She was still trying to keep the events of Charleston a secret. “Uh, not much, just…exploring my career options here, thought I might feel more comfortable at home.”

“Well, if you’re looking for options, Spartanburg’s got plenty! Fish Camp could use some new waitresses, and the pay’s decent! Um…there’s that new clothes shop opening up in the mall, can’t remember the name, though it’s supposed to be pretty fancy. Hell, if nothing else, I could use a nanny!” Tiffany glanced up at this, and frowned at her mom.

Tara’s heart sank just a bit. None of those sounded even remotely appealing to the 3.5 GPA graduate with plenty of high-level work experience. The thought of stooping down to such a level made her want to gag. But she also knew that getting any job that would ask for references would likely be a non-starter; on paper, her CV was impressive, but any digging into the specifics of her employment history would immediately link her to the disaster she was trying to distance herself from. And then, in a small town like this…who knows how fast that news would travel?

Tara thought a bit, and answered…
