This choice: I should head to work soon. I told Iris I'd be back at the Fish Camp this week." • Go Back... Mackenzie sighed and pushed back from the table, groaning as her stomach rubbed against the edge of it. She pushed her plate away and rubbed a self-conscious stripe over the fabric of her jersey pajama dress.
"I should head to work soon," she frowned, "I told Iris I'd be back at the Fish Camp this week."
She hadn't been working at the Fish Camp longer than a few months when all of this divorce shit happened. She'd really only gotten the job in the first place because she was tired of Ryan talking about how she spent his money. And she had figured, at the time, that it would have been good exercise. Plus, it was only a few days out of the week, which still left plenty of time for taking care of Tiffany. Little had she known just how much she'd need this job just a few months down the line when she found him and Whats-Her-Face in their bedroom...
"Well, that sounds to me like you need one more biscuit for the road." Her mama said with a peck on her daughter's chunky cheek, "You let me know when you need to drive over and I'll get you my keys."
"Thanks, momma." Mackenzie smiled dejectedly at the thought of having to get out and about again, "For everything, I mean. Lettin' me move back in, borrow your car, breakfast every mornin'..."
"Oh hush. We're just happy you're back." Mrs. Fogle gave her daughter's fleshy back a pet as she put another biscuit in front of her with a plop of gravy to match, "You eat your fill and then go get dressed, okay?"
The truth was that, if Mack got her fill, she might have been even later than she wound up being already...
***
Mackenzie groaned as she stepped out of the car, her feet aching and her stomach feeling like it was about to burst. She had probably eaten too much before work that morning—but how could she have possibly turned down her mama when she asked her to finish off the eggs? After everything she'd done for her, it would have been rude to say no! Even if she did feel like she was 'bout to pop...
She waddled up the steps to The Fish Camp's back door, grumbling and groaning at the discomfort she felt in her stomach. Pulling down on the loose blue tee, their only uniform besides jeans and close-toed shoes, Mackenzie did her best to hide her bulging food belly. Granted, at her size, that wasn't exactly easy. But the last thing that she wanted to think about was how fat she looked. She'd probably gained five pounds since she'd taken her little sabbatical anyway, and suddenly she could feel each and every one of them in her big fat gut.
"Welcome back, hun!" Iris greeted Mackenzie warmly with a hug and an extra wide smile, "You here for a full shift today?"
"Half'a one." Mackenzie sighed as she made her way over to the kitchen counter where there weren’t any chairs that would fit around her girth anyways, "I'm gonna be here for the lunch rush, and that's about it."
Iris laughed good-naturedly and patted down Mack's shoulder affectionately.
"Well honey we're just happy to have y'aboard."
Mackenzie smiled in spite of herself, feeling slightly better already.
"Thanks Iris," she said with a grateful nod, "I'm glad to be back."
The Fish Camp was a Boiling Springs institution. Her parents used to come here when they were teenagers, and probably her parents before that. There were a lot of places to get fried flounder or shrimp or hush puppies, but Fish Camp was one of the better established ones. She and her family had been coming here off-and-on for years; her youth group used to come here when she was still in high school! Mackenzie had to admit that, in spite of her being a little rounder than most of the other waitress that Iris staffed around here, there was something about the Fish Camp that made her feel like she'd come home.
Not to mention, the added benefits of first dibs at the uglies and guaranteed leftovers after every shift...
"Ah-hem," Mackenzie cleared her throat, "Where am I today?" indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
