“So, I’m just really curious about this Norah person.” Quinn said, finally deciding on a conversation topic. “Like, I get that she’s your aunt, but you’re being a little cagey about what it was like to actually be around her. Seems like it might’ve been a mix of good and bad, huh?”
You laughed shortly. “Yeah, you kind of hit the nail on the head, Quinn. Aunt Norah was really a handful. It’s been about a year now since I’ve last seen her. The last time was when she came over for a surprise visit during Christmas time, and stayed a week. I spent Christmas day sloshing away in her stomach after she swallowed me with her eggnog, and that was hardly the only incident that week.”
“Oh, yikes.” Quinn’s eyes widened. “You did mention she was pretty airheaded, didn’t you?”
“I was putting it lightly, for her sake.” You groaned. “Norah’s a total scatterbrain. I’ll be sitting on the couch, she’ll see me and say hello, turn around and notice her favorite show is on, and then sit down to watch it for three hours…right on top of me! Even then, I’m lucky if she realizes what she’s done when she finally does stand up, or if I’m glued to her butt for the foreseeable future.” You gave Quinn a sidelong look. “And of course, if we’re talking six or more years ago, Tracy would’ve let it all happen with a quiet smirk.”
Quinn tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Norah and your sister put you through the ringer, huh? Gotta say, it’s impressive you survived through it all.”
You nodded. “Guess you could say I learned from every experience. Certainly there are some experiences that I wish I could burn from my brain, though.” You forced out a laugh. “In my worst nightmares, I can still remember Norah believing Tracy back in middle school, when she squished up my body and said I was a ‘new, special toe cleaner’. Norah used me to pick out lint and toe jam from her disgusting feet for a week…before throwing me in the trash where I barely escaped before being taken out to the curb.”
Quinn gaped, but said nothing for a moment. Finally, she frowned. “And can you tell me more about that…tiny recruiter…thing? Her job, right?”
“Yeah, and it was a cushy one that let her mostly work from home.” You explained. “Basically, Norah was assigned a sheet of tiny-specific job postings, and then needed to recruit tinies to fill the spots as quickly as possible. It wasn’t too hard for her. Tiny-exclusive jobs pay really well, usually because of the danger involved, and Norah’s exuberance was hard to turn down. She’s also…and I mean this from a purely factual standpoint, not anything weird…really attractive given her age. Most tinies would fall head over heels to make her happy by saying yes.
“The trouble was, given her penchant for being forgetful and oblivious, Norah would almost never explain the jobs clearly or fully. She probably just didn’t get how awful some tasks could be when you’re just one inch. She’d also overestimate herself sometimes, and come up short with approaching deadlines. That’s where she’d come and rope me into a job, promising double pay and that they would only be for a week or so.” You paused. “However, one week of serving as a head executive’s ‘stress toy’ felt like an eternity when I did it.”
This last statement drew ire from Quinn, and a flash of anger danced in her eyes. “One of her recruiting jobs was to sell yourself as a stress toy?” The black-haired giantess asked moodily.
“Yep. And there were plenty that were so much worse. Again, Norah was kind of too dumb to realize what she was coercing so many tinies into, so I can’t be too mad at her specifically. Those are still some bad memories of mine.” You stopped for a second and then smiled wistfully. “That sums up Norah, actually. A decent bit of good wrapped up in a whole lot of bad. Add in Tracy during her torment years, and you’ve hit peak awful.” You chuckled.
Quinn shook her head, overwhelmed by the sheer craziness of your life. Even still, you could see the intrigue dancing in her eyes now that her anger had cooled, and sure enough, a minute later, she was ready to hear some more specific stories.
