It felt snug on her larger form, even with its straps fully loosened. She considered upgrading it to a larger model, but decided against it. Its snugness was pleasant.
"I'm heading out!" Lauren shouted to nobody in particular. "You don't need or want to ask me why!" She could hear her brothers talking; neither of them bothered to reply to her. "Excellent."
Lauren stepped out of the front door, relishing the cool breeze on her face, and walked down the lane towards May's house. Her mind raced. She muttered to herself as she did.
"One. I can change reality with my words. Two. I'm not sure how in-control of this I really am. If I tell a lie without intending to change anything, does it still have an effect? Three. I need to figure out if there's any restrictions on this. I don't think there would be, but if I accidentally make myself explode with a poorly-worded phrase, I'd be so pissed off. Four--"
Lauren stopped in the middle of the street. She knew she was making good points, but that last one was especially pertinent. She cleared her head and carefully put a statement together.
"I can't kill myself or seriously injure myself with my powers," she began. "Nor can I put myself in a position where I am unable to use my power if I wanted to. No changes that I make to the world will harm me or pose any threat to me or my power. I'll always be able to use my power whenever I want to." There was a pause. Lauren didn't feel any different. "Guess I'll take that on faith for now." She looked around to see that nobody was watching, before continuing down the road. "Either way, I'll need to test this out."
Lauren turned the corner towards May's house. It was a small, two-story building with a tiny but well-kept garden round the back. She walked up to the door, spoke a few words to ensure that May would be home alone, and rang the bell. The door opened almost immediately. May stood in the door, looking up at her. Even prior to Lauren's new form, May was a short, mousy girl. She had wavy brown hair, pale skin, and wide brown-eyes that were magnified by her large glasses. She was wearing a shirt with a stylized TARDIS on it. Lauren looked down at her friend, the new height difference sending electricity down her spine.
"Oh, Laur--er, Jade! I, um, didn't know you'd be over! Come in, I--I guess?" May gestured behind her, inviting Lauren in. Lauren entered and walked up the stairs towards May's bedroom. The room fit May's personality; its walls were festooned with posters depicting myriad blockbuster movies and TV shows featuring attractive men with otherworldly problems. A particle-board shelf lined with young adult novels and not-quite-trashy manga stood next to a messy bed and even-messier computer desk. Lauren turned around and sat down on the bed. "So, er, what are you here for?"
Lauren grinned. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
