Chapter #4

The Attic

by: Thomas Johnson Author IconMail Icon
Arianna led two of the movers up to the attic, to put away boxes of old mementos and family things.

"That should be fine there! Thank you guys" she said to the two men, who were both fatigued from the journey up to the attic.

"No problem...ma'am...all in a days...work" one of them said in between breaths.

The two workers then headed down the stairs of the attic, and Arianna was about to join them when something caught her eye. It was fairly dark in the attic, with the only light entering it was coming from an uncovered window. However, at the bottom of one of the walls, Arianna could see that there was a light emitting from the other side of the wall.

"That's strange," she thought to herself, "Is there another room behind that?".

She walked over to the wall and put her ear against it. She could hear the brimming of an old lightbulb, which she attributed the light underneath too. Tapping her knuckle against the wall, it sounded a bit hollow, meaning that there had to be another room on the other side of the wall. Arianna felt up against the wall with her hands, trying to feel for some sort of switch or button.

Sadly, her efforts proved meaningless, as there was no sort of secret switch or lever on the wall.

"Dammit, I'll have to ask John about this later. The blueprint didn't mention another room in the attic" she said, turning away from the wall and heading down the stairs.

As she walked down the stairs towards the door of the attic, she spotted a light switch to the right of the door. Instinctively, she flipped it up only to see that it controlled the main lights in the attic, which ran along the stairs and the ceiling.

"Lookit, me, getting my hopes up over something silly" she laughed to herself, looking closer at the light switch to turn it off.

Arianna then lost her balance as she reached toward the light switch, and stuck her hand out toward the switch to plant her arm to catch herself from falling. Her hand landed on top of the light switch itself and pushed the white rectangle surrounding it inwards, which caused a commotion up in the attic.

She paused for a bit, listening to old gears turn and maneuver before they finally settled in place. Almost right after the noises concluded, Arianna could feel excitement build up within her.

"No way, no way, no way," she said as she looked at the secret button she had just pushed in and as she raced up the steps to see what she'd done.

When she reached the top of the stairs, she gasped as she say that a doorway had now appeared in the wall that she was inspecting before. The switch she activated by the light had seeming opened this up, and all Arianna could do was stand there in amazement.

After about a minute and a half of being awestruck, she walked forward and peeked into the new doorway.

Inside, she saw a medium-sized room, with a single lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. The light illuminated a large object, which was covered in cream-colored sheets. There was also a smaller table-looking object near the larger one, just to the side of it.

"Holy shit. I can't believe I just found this, in our new house! What if it's treasure? What if it's a boobytrap? What if it's just something the old owner left behind?" she said to herself, taking in her situation.

She walked over to the larger object and peeled the sheet away.

It was a large plexiglass cylinder with an odd metal platform inside of it, and some sort of tablet embedded into the inside of it. Outside of the cylinder, there was some sort of sci-fi-looking computer, with two large buttons on the top. As she got closer, she could see that one was red, which said Off, and the other was green, but said On. As she inspected the cylinder, she could see that it had door handles on it, meaning that one was able to step inside. Near the handle, she could see a notice.

NOTICE: MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 2 SUBJECTS

"I guess they really don't want more than two before in this thing, huh?" she said to herself, continuing her search for clues.

Her attention then turned to the smaller object that was still covered. She pulled that sheet off and revealed it to be a tray, like what surgeons usually place their instruments on, and a small book. It didn't have too many pages, and sort of looked like a typed-up instruction manual.

Arianna picked up the book and inspected the cover, which said:

"Modi-Chamber Owner's Manual by Dr. Rubenstock

PLEASE READ BEFORE USE.

FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR OTHER UNCERTAINTIES
"

"Death? What the hell? Just what is this thing supposed to be?" Arianna said to herself as she flipped through the pages quickly.

What does she do?

You have the following choices:

1. Read it now

*Noteb*
2. Read it later, before bed

*Noteb*
3. Decides not to read it, and attempts to turn the machine on

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
