According to the last news reports before the internet and cable were knocked out, the western peninsula wasn't hit by the bombs, at least compared to up north and east. All that was there were national parks not worth bombing. It was certainly safer than the irradiated cities, and if you could find some shelter and supplies it would be worth it.
