Chapter #4

Amelia Mystique.

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
Waterfront City... I heard many strange tales about it from my grand parents on both sides of the family. My grandmother on my father's side and my grandfather on my mother's side. Both were born there and fled when strange things began to happen including, allegedly, an invasion from our own government. Mom and dad were both born there too but never really spoke of it as all my grandparents fled shortly after they were born. What really intrigued me was that Waterfront City did not exist on any map or anywhere on the internet. Both mom and dad would scold me each time they caught me researching the subject.

"Nothing good will come of you poking your cute little button nose into that mystery." Sternly, mom would say. "The city is off the books for a reason and we are only living here until you can learn to control yourself."

I never understood what mom meant by that but I had a nagging feeling it had something to do with the city they were dreading moving back to for 'my sake'. I had heard them arguing about it behind closed doors for weeks before we made the move so it was clear I was eventually going to find out...

It was my first day of school in the middle of the semester. Nomad High School was much like any other school with its pecking order among the popular crowd, jocks and gossipers. Only there was one other crowd that everyone seemed to avoid and, unfortunately, I fit that category. We were called 'the outsiders' and I was among those who came to live in the city from somewhere else.

Lunch was uncomfortable for my first day as many of the various groups gave me a death glare just for the crime of coming near their table. I tried to keep my composure as I sat alone at an isolated table. "Welcome to Wonderland, Amelia." Softly, I muttered. "Do you dare chase the rabbit down the hole...?"

I was about eat but paused as I realized I left my purse by the cash register on the lunch line. I stood up, reaching my hand out as I walked to retrieve it only to be taken aback as it suddenly vanished from the lunch line and appeared in my hand! I froze, stunned by what had just happened. i then gulped as I found everyone had stopped what they were doing to look directly at me. The other 'outsiders' looked at me with their jaws dropped in shock as a girl from the popular crowd stood up and marched towards me with a stern look on her face.

"You, come with me now!" Whispering, she demanded.

A boy from the jocks picked up my tray and followed the girl as I was taken...
