When Chip asked if the Prince and Belle were going to live happily ever after, his mother's answer "Of course" was the answer that would be echoed by all the guests at the wedding.
It was not a sentiment that was universally shared. Quite a few resented and even feared the return of nobie rule to the region. Many in the village were angry at the death of Gaston, as well as other members of the lynch mob who had stormed the castle and were killed in the process.
Many laid the blame for all these events at Belle's feet. These same folks did NOT want Belle to have a happy ending.
Since an enchantment had threatened to ruin the life of the Prince and his servants, an enchantment was deemed a fitting punishment for Belle. The thing was, no one who was plotting revenge on Belle had the talent, or knew someone with the talent, to cast a curse like the one that had been used on the Prince.
There was a local hedgewitch, however, who could create a potion that would shrink Belle down to half a foot in height.
