Chapter #4

Krista Tyrnalor

    by: Unknown
Krista gazes at the man standing below her as she lounges on her throne, a tray of fruits displayed on her lap which she pushes around.

"You, want me to force your neighbor to give you back your instrument?"

"Slave, ma'am." The man ducks his head. She pauses as she opened her mouth to respond and her eyes go hard and cold. How dare he talk back. The impulsive ungrateful thief.

"No, I will not, you stole the Slave and now he has been borrowed by another person. Thank you for telling me of unimportant things that I can waste my precious time on. Get out."

He turns on his heels and raves as he stomps away. "Stupid" "Foolish" "Girl" echo to where she sits. She shoots to her feet the tray on her lap clattering to the floor. "Come here," Her voice cuts across the room like an arrow.

The man freezes and turns slowly. With no choice but to obey, he ambles back his shoulders hunched. "My lady I see the wisdom in your words, I wish not to keep you any longer." He climbs the few stairs to her throne with fear written across his face.

"As you were leaving you spoke, what did you say." She covers his lips the instant he begins to answer. "Choose your words wisely." She pulls her hand away.

He searches out each of her guards and breathes the smallest of sighs seeing none had come any closer. He turns back and looks her straight in her piercing eyes that hold a large reputation throughout her kingdom. "I would never speak disrespect of your....." He gasps and looks down to where Krista holds a knife that protrudes from below his ribs. He sucks in a small painful breath and clutches at her for balance he catches her hair as he stumbles and falls to his knees. She cries out and falls with him releasing the knife to grab her hair. Her guards rush to her side and drag the man roughly away. One of her men helps her to her feet. Without a word and with gentle fingers he cleans the blood from her hair. He moves away and picks up the scattered fruits. Krista scrunched her eyebrows and stared at him trying to see past the hood he wears darkening his face. She looks around and realizes her guards had disposed of the man and had moved back to their places. "Darren, I thought you weren't going to be back for a few more days?"

"I decided to come back earlier and it seems I chose correctly." As he said this he looked at her the lights nearby lightening the shadows. "I decided not to leave my young queen alone in the world she had built."

Krista clenched her fists, staring at the blood that had begun to dry. "I'm not young."

"Seventeen is far too young to be forced to rule an entire kingdom alone without someone she trusts nearby." Darren gestured at one of the guards who went and filled a bowl of water and brought it to him before moving away. He takes her hands and pressed them into the cool water as he scrubbed at the blood.

"You have no right to say anything your only 18." She tries to pull her hands away but he keeps them firmly in the water until she meets his eyes.

"I have lived a less pampered life and with these people, you call family far longer than you. I know how to take care of my property and the things I care for."

"Have I not shown I can take care of myself? Have I not built a kingdom; a home, that I can call my own." She stands and he allows her to pull away. "A place of refuge for the ones cast off from all other places?" She stops on the balcony staring out at the darkening kingdom below.

"You have shown such and you have built an amazing kingdom. But you should allow someone to care for you sometimes. You don't have to do it all." He stands behind her watching the movements through the city. No lights lit the streets as a normal city. No guards of any kind walked the streets. As the streets darkened in this kingdom the activity would begin.
