Just as Abby thought about texting Luke and Carmen, she got a message from Luke inviting them over to his place to hang out. Of course, she said yes, and then put the shrink ray into her bag. As she was going into the garage to get her bike, Abby's phone vibrated again. It was Carmen saying that she would be there too. Abby set her bag into the bike basket and petaled towards Luke's house.
It took her about ten minutes to bike through town. Carmen must have just beaten her since her bike was secure to the rack across Luke's townhouse. Abby parked hers and then went to the door. Before she rang the doorbell, Luke was letting her inside. "Hey!"
"Hi," she responded as they walked into his living room. Carmen sat on the couch, playing a level of Super Mario Brothers. "What is up?"
"Nothing much," stated Luke. "I just figured we could hang out since I have the place to myself. It was Maddie's turn to go on a trip with my parents. They just left for Hawaii. I ordered some pizza with money that my parents left. We can have a game slash movie night if you guys want." He sat next to Carmen and helped her beat the level.
"I have something cool to show you two while we wait," Abby said, reaching into her bag. "This is my grandpa's latest invention."
"What is it?" asked Carmen, perking up with interest. She knew Abby's grandpa always came up with the craziest things.
"This is a shrink ray," Abby said, enjoying the stunned looks on her friend's faces. "Here, let me give you a demonstration." After adjusting the dials, she fired at the armchair across the room. Luke and Carmen gasped as it shrunk before their eyes. The chair was now mouse-sized. Abby walked over and picked up the tiny char, handing it to Luke. "Take a look."
"Dude, this is so cool," exclaimed Luke. He turned it over a couple of times before passing it to Carmen.
"I feel like a giant holding this little chair," stated Carmen.
"The device also works in reverse," Abby said as she took the shrunken chair and replaced it on the other side of the room. With a few adjustments to the dials, she fired again, and the armchair was returned to normal size.
“This is awesome! I can’t believe that it is real.” Luke proclaimed. “You know I have to ask, does the shrink ray work on humans? Ever since I saw Honey We Shrunk Ourselves, I thought it would be so cool to have a shrink ray.”
“Well, we haven’t done any tests, but we assume so. It is definitely safe for other living organisms,” replied Abby. She explained some of the tests they had done, including the finding that objects seemed to be more durable when shrunk.
"It seems the best way to figure out is to try," stated Carmen. "Based on those tests you mentioned, it seems safe enough."
Abby bit her lip and then nodded. "My grandpa would be quite upset with me for testing it without him, especially when it could be dangerous. However, I have been tempted to try it on a human ever since we started on this project."
"Well, I think it would be fine if the test subject were willing," Carmen chimed in. After some discussion...
