Duma is a member of a race that calls itself the Chitra-ya, though most Romans call them Chitas. The Chitra-ya originate somewhere to the east of the Parthian empire, and most of them who make their way into the Roman Empire do so as mercenaries for hire. Duma’s father, though, is a well established merchant, with multiple connections in exotic, faraway Indus. Duma’s father is also well connected with the Imperial government, and is one of the few nonhumans recently allowed to buy Roman citizenship for himself and his family.
Unlike Roman humans, Chitra-ya believe in equality for both genders. So it is understandable that Duma’s father wants his daughter to have the same access to a good education that her older brothers had. Which is where you come in.
