"Men are not potatoes," you tell Blacdan with a smile as you seal your helmet.
"Men are not potatoes," he agrees as he seals you up in your cockpit. A few minutes later, when your ground crew is clear, you take your JD-13 off for your last training fight.
You remember when you first met Blacdan, when you two were paired off at the beginning of your training program. The Sankur male didn't look like the sort to teach you how to utilize the advanced technology in your space fighter. To be honest, Blacdan didn't look like any type of instructor at all. Blacdan looked to be the nightmarish materialization of the Big Bad Wolf character from the Little Red Riding Hood stories. He was a very solid two meters tall, and looked the sort that you wanted by your side when you walked down a dark alleyway.
Instead, you found Blacdan to be meticulous, patient, and thoughtful.
Blacdan didn't just teach you how to fly the JD-13. He taught you how to think about life. He had you reading (and talking about!) authors as diverse as Jonathan Swift and Robert Heinlein. By the time training was over, you not only knew how to fly and fight the JD13, you knew why you were doing so.
As training came to an end, a squadron of JD-13s was being formed, to be stationed on Mars. Will Blacdan follow you to Mars to be your crew chief, or remain on Earth as a trainer?
