During the rebuilding years between the two Harvester invasions, entertainment was a luxury. Hollywood and other cinematic centers didn't garner the resources and attention that they might have in a world without the Harvesters. So a lot of part time independents picked up the slack.
A young communications technician named Milana Vayntrub and some of her friends developed a webcast series based on Marvel Comics' New Warriors, with Milana playing Squirrel Girl. The series was a hit, and got actual financial backing, though the webcast series ended abruptly with the second Harvester invasion.
The Tirna circus, learning of humanity's collective love of all things Squirrel Girl, adapted the costumes of the cousins accordingly.
