Jack groggily awoke to the buzzing of his phone and the rhythm of the beat of his alarm song going off. Groaning, he sat up, reached over to his phone, and shut the alarm off. Jack fell back into his pillow, but laid there for only a few moments before getting back up and jumping off his bed. Today was his first day of university, and he was a little nervous. He certainly didn't want to be late for his first class, Jack felt that doing something like that would set a bad habit for the rest of the school year. Instead, he picked out clothes, grabbed his towel and toiletries, then went to the bathroom in his residence hall to shower.
Fortunately, there wasn't anyone inside and Jack was able to get through with the first part of his morning routine without any hassle. After finishing his shower, Jack dried off, put his clothes on, then went to the sink to brush his teeth. As he was brushing, a guy who was similar in stature and build entered. He nodded at Jack, to which Jack repeated. The guy went to a sink near Jack and began brushing. For a few moments, there was silence as the two continued their routine, then once they both finished, the other guy spoke. "Hey, I'm Emerson, I'm a freshman," Emerson introduced. Jack was taken aback by his blunt socialization, but spoke right back. "Hey, I'm Jack. I'm also a freshman," Jack replied. Emerson nodded. "Cool, cool. Where are you from? What made you come to this university?". Jack hesitated and looked at his phone. "Listen, I hate to be rude and leave, but I have a class to get to. You mind if I give you my phone number? I'd be down to hang out," Jack quickly explained. Emerson nodded, then took a piece of paper containing Jack's number and watched as Jack rushed out of the bathroom.
Jack reached his single dorm, dropped his shower materials off, then grabbed his backpack and left. Looking back at his phone, Jack noticed that he still had about ten minutes before his first class. He sighed in relief, and took a bit off his rate of walking. Once outside the residence hall, Jack saw that the walkways of his campus were filled with fellow students, all looking to get to their first class of the school year. He chuckled and thought to himself how crazy it was that he was now all alone at this university, essentially beginning a new life, with new friends, and possibly even a new identity. Though there was such a large crowd of people, there was a smooth transition from person to person and Jack was able to get to his class with five minutes to spare.
Inside the classroom, Jack noticed that it wasn't a normal, large lecture hall, but rather a more intimate and closed space with long, single tables, and several seats per table, with the tables formed in a sort of circle. There were a few people already here, and Jack decided to sit at the back right part of the combination of tables, where there seemed to be the most seclusion. Granted, he did want to make friends quickly, but something told him that perhaps taking it slowly might help. As the class filled in, Jack counted eighteen students, including himself, in total, with the vast majority being girls. Shockingly, Jack only saw five boys, including himself, in the whole class. Once the professor walked in, there was a quick introduction on his part, then he began going over his presentation of the class and its syllabus, instructing the students to take out their laptops, or notebooks if without a laptop, and begin noting the important information.
When Jack opens his backpack, does he find his shrink ray instead of his laptop?
