The canary ran as fast as possible towards where Atom the dog was hiding, bottle in hand. The cat was coming up quickly, using his longer legs to shrink the gap between them. Cars were smashed out of the way and light poles were downed as the two animals ran as fast as they could.
The canary, sensing that it’s luck was about to run out, lifted the bottle and took a good drink, trying not to spill it all over himself. He couldn’t go back for a second drink because he just barely had time to duck under one of the cat’s huge claws. The big feline was right behind him.
Atom was still a short distance away, hiding from sight, and the canary hoped that he’d be able to make it to his protector before he was nabbed and gobbled up.
The canary felt strange rumblings as he ran, but was more focused on dodging the cat. The yellow bird would hop up high, bouncing off the side of a building and using its wings to slowly settle down, then he would duck under a stop light, doing everything it could to not be clawed apart.
Finally, one turn away, the canary rounded the building Atom was hiding behind and stumbled, tripping over something and careening headfirst into the glass side of a building.
“This is it! Oh no!” the canary thought, picturing the cat coming up and nipping right into the canary’s rump that was presented, stuck into the air.
There was a loud crash and the canary felt a thump on his butt. But it wasn’t anything too painful. The canary tried righting himself, struggling to get out of the debris around him, and when he stood up, he finally paused a moment to look around. He’d grown while running, towering easily as large as that huge rat he’d seen moments before. He looked down, a huge grin spreading on his beak, and spotted Atom, looking a little worse for wear. The canary had clearly tripped over the friendly dog when he’d come sprinting around the corner. Then the canary turned to look back at his huge expanse of yellow, feathery rump, and saw the cat stuck to it, looking like a tiny toy to the huge yellow bird.
“Now I could get used to this,” the canary said, plucking the cat off of him and dropping the feline to the ground before pinning it with those newly grown talons. The canary held the bottle of Jumbo-Gro tightly, seeing that some had spilled, and looked to Atom who was shaking himself and getting his bearings. “Sorry about that crash,” the canary said.
Atom looked up and up, finally making eye contact with the previously tiny bird, wondering what the canary was planning.
