A man who looked to be in his mid 40s stood at the door.
“Delivery for…”
He checked his small tablet.
“Brooke Wider?”
“That’s me!”
“Sign here please.”
“Sooo… what is it?”
“Delivery from Dyna-Corp, miss.”
“Duh, I can see that from the bright orange box. I mean what’s in it?”
“He doesn’t know Mikayla, Jesus.”
Brooke took the box, surprised at its weight.
“Thanks so much!”
“Ma’am.”
The delivery man touched his hat and stepped back as Brooke swung the door closed.
“Alright, crack it open, I’m dying over here.”
“Relax, it’s actually super heavy.”
“Is it a phone? It’s big enough to be a phone…”
“I think it’s too heavy to be a phone.”
“Hmm, the box is maybe too big for a phone anyway…”
They crossed into the kitchen.
“Ooo! Maybe it’s a kitchen thing, like a fancy can opener!”
“We make electronics at Dyna-Corp, sister. I seriously doubt it’s a can opener with a computer inside.”
Mikayla pouted.
“Alright then, maybe it’s like a projector thing, so we can watch movies outside!”
“You want to watch movies outside, in this weather?”
“Well… no, but…”
“Alright, enough guessing. I’m opening it up.”
“Fucking finally!”
“Hand me a knife.”
Brooke ran the tip of a dull paring knife through the logo stickers holding the box top to the bottom. The bright orange top slid off the bottom in one smooth piece, leaving an all white open topped box behind.
“This is some fancy packaging. I didn’t know they were going to use retail packaging for this.”
“Who cares about the box??”
“I’m just saying it sort of explains why all this Dyna-Corp stuff is so expensive.”
“Uuuuuuggggghhh…..”
Brooke lifted a small booklet out of the box, then a power cord, and finally, a small black rectangle, about twice the size of a deck of cards.
