This choice: A small idol with an oddly large butt and no head • Go Back... Serene had been browsing the shop for a few minutes, mostly as a way to kill some time on the way to work while she waited for the bus. She worked at the local museum as a curator that specialized in obscure cultures and myths. She had hoped that such a bizarre shop might have something to interest her, but so far nothing had really caught her eye. that was until she happened upon a section of the shop that seemed filled to the brim with odd fetishes and artifacts. Among the various books, trinkets and statues, one stood out to her. A stone idol, roughly hewn in the shape of a buxom woman with a very large butt and a multitude of arcane symbols carved about it. Oddly, it was missing a head. Upon further examination, it didn't look like it had broken off, but rather the statue had been made that way intentionally. It was unlike anything she had in her collection, so she picked it up and brought it to the store counter.
The eccentric shop keep gave her surprised look. "Oh?", she said with a smirk, "Not many that come in here that can pick out a real treasure like that."
Serene gently placed the idol on the table between them. "Is that so? I've actually never seen anything like this. I mean, it sort of looks Indonesian in origin, but it also has aspects of Mesopotamia, and these symbols are new to me. Do you know the origin of this piece?"
Quko chuckled, "I'll admit, even for someone as informed as myself, I don't quite know where it came from or what it represents. I got it from an intriguing woman in Tibet, but she was gifted that idol somewhere else entirely, so it's origins are unfortunately a mystery to me?".
"It's not just some tacky trinket is it? It seems to genuine to be something someone made recently." Serene said.
"Oh no, this is the real deal. I may not know where it originated, but I do know for certain it represents an ancient goddess of beauty and fertility, and some other stuff I don't quite remember." She rubbed a hand over the headless shoulders of the idol, "A most peculiar depiction to be sure, but maybe the heedlessness is a metaphor?"
"Anyways, enough talk. You seem like an appreciator of history. It's yours for, hmmmm..." She scanned Serene up and down, "Let's say a hundred dollars, and that's a steal I assure you."
Serene hid her excitement. If this really was a piece of history, it was worth significantly more a hundred bucks. And if it wasn't, the money loss wasn't enough to impact her. She agreed and quickly walked away from the store before the owner could reconsider her purchase.
