'Would everyone standup and give a round of applause for your 2014 graduates.' The announcer said. The stadium of 60,000 parents and parental guardians stood to their feet and cheered on their sons and daughters. The 15,000 high school graduates stood up and tossed their caps into the air. The enormous Lilliputian stadium filled with celebratory jubilation.
When the cheers and applause started to die down, the announcer came over the loud speaker once again. 'If I can have your attention?' The stadium calmed down a bit more. 'We will now announce the winner of the Brobdingnagian Lottery.'
'Oh, I hope I win,' Connie said. 'I deserve to be a huge Brobdingnagian and not some small Lilliputian.'
'I hope you win too, Connie,' Abbie said in her mousy voice. Abbie was a naturally quiet and shy teenage girl. 'I can picture you as a Brobdingnagian.'
'As you all know,' the announcer interrupted the girl's chat, 'in an effort to mix our three civilizations and spread diversity, the Brobdingnag government allows one graduating student from each graduating class to become a Brobdingnagian. All students who wanted to be a part of the lottery, have entered their name into the computer. We will be randomly selecting a graduate, right now.'
Connie held onto Abbie's hand as she trembled in anticipation. 'Wish me luck.'
'I do.' Abbie said softly. She too, put her name in the lottery. She hasn't told her best friend Connie that she was putting her name because she knew how much Connie wanted to be a Brobby. Secretly, Abbie didn't mind seeing herself as a huge Brobby instead of a speck-sized Lilliputian.
The huge stadium screens started flashing all the names of those who put themselves in the lottery. Thousands of names flashed in a second. 'Please, please, please,' Connie muttered. Everyone held their breaths in anticipation. Someone in the graduating class was going to be grown six miles tall and join the Brobdingnagian class that very night.
The names started to flash slower. Abbie gripped her friend's hand tighter. Maybe she had a chance of being picked. She could already picture the looks of everybody in school, surprised that the shy timid girl was going to become bigger than their entire city.
The flashing names went slower. She heard other students groan as they saw their name display on the screen, only to be replaced by another name. Abbie's heart fluttered. She hasn't seen her name displayed; that meant it was coming up. So what if the odds were 15,000 to one. There was still a chance for her.
