Chapter #5

Midnight Thoughts

    by: Writetime Author IconMail Icon
Her words are soothing and warm. Myos closes his eyes and listens to the sound of her voice, letting it wash over him like waves. It's comforting, and he wants to keep listening. Part of him wonders why she cares so much. Why she bothers spending time with him, a Tomkin. His eyes flutter open as the Arch Angel begins to move, shifting her body as her wings spread out. The sun shines down upon them, illuminating her white feathers and causing them to glow in an ethereal luminescence. She smiles as the light hits her face, and the world is full of radiance.

As the sun begins to set, Myos can feel his heartbeat slowing down and his breathing growing shallow. Hidden behind the tresses of her hair, the Arch Angel turns to face him, her eyes glowing a bright yellow, "It's been a long day, Myos." She murmurs, her voice carrying an unearthly cadence, "Come and lay down with me." She reaches out with one massive finger, and with a gentle nudge, she pulls him onto her chest.

Myos gasps softly, surprised by her forwardness, "You..." he trails off, unsure how to respond. "Be not afraid. Come closer." Her words are gentle, yet commanding, and he finds himself drawn towards her, unable to resist her pull. She leans forward, her wings wrapping around them, creating a cocoon of feathers? It feels like feather should and yet they glow in an unearthly light. "It is alright, Myos." She coos, and he can feel her breath against his skin, warm and comforting. "I will watch over you." Her voice is gentle and reassuring, and he feels safe in her arms, safe in the knowledge that she will protect him.

Myos blinks, feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on him, and he nods. The Arch Angel's wings begin to fold, and the world goes dark, as she pulls him into her bosom, and his eyes close. The Arch Angel smiles as she feels the Tomkin stop moving signaling that he has gone off into the world of dreams. She sighs and relaxes, letting the warmth and comfort of the moment linger. She is glad to have had this moment with him. She winces as she moves, the soreness of her muscles returning. Myos' massages were indeed effective. But her earthly form was still prone to the aches and pains of all fleshy creatures. Still she is thankful for this brief moment. Her Tomkin had proven himself worthy in the face of adversity. And she was glad to have seen this. She was also glad to have shared this moment.

It was moments like these that were why she had descend from Aether to fight. To preserve life and love in the mortal realm. Even the smallest spark of hope was a precious commodity. As the Tomkin sleeps she feels the warmth and tenderness of the moment. This had been worth it. It was not the glory or fame that she craved. No it was this. The chance to share this moment of tenderness and affection with another. For the Arch Angel there was no greater treasure. She had made the right decision to follow the summons of She Who Brings Them Into the Light. In her presence, the ArchAngel had felt so small that she was afraid she would be lost in the eye of She Who Brings Them Into the Light if she stared to long. The ArchAngel would not mention her name not even in thought. Names contain great power a power older than the world itself. To invoke the name was to call out into the abyss. To invite the presence of that which dwells in the infinite outer darkness.

The Arch Angel looked upon her charge. Myos had worked his fingers to the bone trying to prove his worth and loyalty to his savior. To try despite the fate he had been given. He refused to give into despair or hate. Even now the Arch Angel could feel his heartbeat, the blood pumping through his veins, his tiny form now curled around her pinky. It was a miracle. An act of faith that kept the Arch Angel going. The knowledge that there were still those willing to put their trust and faith in a higher power. Even a Tomkin could find strength and courage within themselves to do what was right. It was because of people like Myos that she was able to fight the battles she did.

Even as the wind blew and the world began to change, she felt the strength and courage that flowed through her Tomkin. It was the kind of faith that could change the world. It was a belief that allowed the Arch Angel to carry the burden of the world on her shoulders. Would he believe her if she shared this truth with him?

Would he understand the sacrifice she made? That her wings were not just a symbol of her divinity but a physical manifestation of her very existence. That they were a gift and a curse. A gift to fly free and a curse to know the loneliness of the heavens above. Having become incarnate she was not subjected to all the fragilities of humanity, yet unable to fully experience its joys. She was bound by her oath and the limits of her form.

The Arch Angel took a deep breath. There were no more doubts. Myos had proven himself and shown that all life including an orphaned Tomkin was valuable and worth fighting for. Shaking her head the Arch Angel laid down to rest against the hill. These heavy thoughts would not help her prepare for the next day.

"Rest now Myos.." The Arch Angel whispered, and then she too drifted off to sleep.
