Space exploration actually has many different fields that need to be covered. Such fields include:
Deep space scouting: Sending a fully crewed exploration ship to explore solar systems and scan new planets for what they contain and potentially find new alien life
Anomaly investigation: When scans find anomalous events, specialized scientists are tasked with investigating them. Such anomalies can range from unusual energy readings from stars to unusual geological formations
Archeological excavation: Some new planets are home to sites of ancient alien activity. Sometimes it's an old structure, a crashed ship, or even an entire planet that fell victim to an ancient alien's disastrous activities.
