Jeffery, the Wolfe's household servant, had been out picking some apples from a nearby tree, so that Mrs. Wolfe could make them into a pie. This gave Max an idea.
"Hey, Jeffery!" He said, "Got something for you!" He showed him the Hysteria roots. "What are those?" Jeffery asked "Something special to surprise your masters. I was my old herd's herbalist. These roots will make any dish all the more delicious. Try adding them to their apple pie tonight. They might even reward you for it."
Jeffery, who had no idea what the roots really were, accepted them and headed back to the house. Max smiled to himself. Now all he had to do was wait.
That night, Max sat under the dining room windowsill, listening for his chance. The Wolfe's had just finished their dinner and were digging into dessert, apple pie.
Suddenly, Max heard them beginning to giggle, which grew steadily louder until they were all laughing like hyenas. This went on for several minutes until one by one, he heard multiple thumps as they dropped to the floor.
Peeking through the window, he saw all the wolves laying face down on the floor, or against the dinner table. They didn't look to be breathing.
Making his way inside, he snatched a ring of keys from Robert's pocket, and made his way to the humans barracks.
He flipped the switch to open all the rooms, and as everyone came out to see what was happening, he announced "The Wolfe's are no more! We're free! Follow me, a friend of mine is waiting for us."
