That was when a series of bright lights came on, blinding Matthew and the others. That was also when they heard, and felt, a loud Thump, into each of their chests.
Matthew felt his limbs give out, as he collapsed to the ground. Someone must have ratted them out, but who?
The answer was something of a shock when he saw the main Breeder Buck, John, walk up to him, and kneel down next to him.
"I told you that your plan wouldn't work," the older buck said, quietly.
"But you're Feral Stock," Matthew spat out. "Why did you betray us?"
"Because your plan for escape was doomed the moment you decided that the Go Date was the start of Winter," said John. "That and they already figured out that someone was stealing tools. Also, you've been blabbing too loudly - they already knew that you were the leader, and that it was going to happen tonight. The real question was simply your Fates."
Matthew gulped. "Our Fates?"
"On if to eat you now, or later," said John. "I told them that it wouldn't be a good idea for them to eat all of you now, given that there's seventy-two of you."
"So, what's going to happen?" Matthew asked.
"First up, you all went down a letter Grade for trying to rebel," said John. "Second, five of you are tonight's Midnight Meal, and you don't get to say Good Bye to your friends and families - you probably already did that, just in case. As for the rest, from now, up until you are picked as a Meal, you will be working with the pigs, and you know what they are like. Also, you won't be able to breed any more. On the plus side, given that you're all on the Priority Meal list, your friends and family will live longer."
"So, how does the selection work?" Matthew asked.
John looked at him and said, "Lowest grade first." He then tapped a mark on Matthew's wrist, one that listed him as a ....
