Chapter #5

Female

Jonathan’s consciousness flickered back into existence, finding that he was still cloaked in complete darkness. Was he still dead? He presumed so; he’d expect to hear traffic or feel wind or something if he were still lying on the road after the truck hit him. He couldn’t even feel himself breathing, or his heart beating.

“Guess this is it,” he sighed aloud, testing if he could even speak in this pitch-black prison. To his surprise, he could, and to his even greater surprise, he spoke in a completely new voice. A mature, effeminate voice carried his words, causing him to jolt back at the sound and brush against a solid surface on either side of him. He realised then that he wasn’t in an empty void, he was in some kind of container. “Uh, h-hello?” He made the woman’s voice call. “What’s going on?! Am I dead? Where am I? And why do I sound like this?!”

When no answers came, Jonathan resolved to get them himself, first ensuring his current state. He could barely even wheeze out a breath when he tried, so how could he be alive? Putting his heart to his chest to double-check it wasn’t beating, his fingers came into contact with something soft lying on top of it. Disturbingly, he could actually feel the touch of his hand on whatever the mass was. This was the breaking point for the now highly-confused Jonathan. Frantically, he threw his arms out around him, trying to find some way out of whatever confinement he was in. A wall creaked open directly in front of him, and he eagerly stepped out into the world it revealed.

“Woah!” He grabbed hold of the edge of the wall that had opened just as he was about to fall. Even that single step felt so weird. Now incredibly curious as to what was causing all these oddities in him, he gazed down warily at himself, expecting to find some kind of mangled corpse or deformed monstrous form. He was even more aghast to find himself with what seemed to be the body of a svelte woman in an elaborate black dress. He gulped, looking down at the pale skin of his chest, now realising what he’d been touching in the darkness. How had he not noticed the weight there before? His hands were slender and bony and ended in long dark-coloured nails. The glistening of a plethora of jewels around his neck and on his hands also caught his attention, and he could see something sparkly dangling from his ears. His examination was completed by noticing a discomforting emptiness between his legs. “Oh man…” He groaned, raising a hand to a face that felt sharp and cold.

He looked around for any kind of explanation as to why he was suddenly a woman he didn’t recognise, finding himself in a grande gothic-style room. A look behind him made Jonathan’s stomach drop; it looked like the box he was trapped in was actually a coffin. “So…I am dead?!” He asked no one in particular. Looking around for some sort of mirror, Jonathan could find only a window, showing a pitch-black night sky outside. Resenting the fact that he had to walk over to it, Jonathan picked up his flowing dress so he wouldn’t trip, and took tender steps to his destination, realising with frustration that he was wearing high-heels and that every step made his new body shift in uncomfortable ways. “At least if I was a ghost or something I wouldn’t have to deal with this…”

Finally, he reached the window, and stared into it to find…the room reflected behind him. He could make out the lights from the candles and other features, but neither he nor the person he’d become could be found. “Oh no,” he groaned again as the pieces fell into place. Pale skin, the lack of a pulse, waking up from a coffin, and now having no reflection. His dread was confirmed when he moved his tongue around the inside of an unfamiliar mouth, finding two razor-sharp teeth. Somehow that truck had turned him into some kind of vampire!

“This makes no sense!” He glared down at his undead form. You didn’t become a vampire by being hit by a truck, you had to get bit by another vampire! And as far as Jonathan knew, you looked mostly the same - you kept your gender and age at the very least.

His next theory was that he’d been reincarnated into this person after dying, which made a bit more sense, but didn’t seem preferable to Jonathan. That meant he’d drawn the short straw; he could’ve become a superhero or a legendary knight. Instead though, he was tiptoeing around in a dress, hoping he wouldn’t get a sudden craving for blood.

“Vampires still have powers sometimes, though, right?” He asked aloud hopefully. His arms were slender and effeminate, but maybe he had some kind of superhuman strength? Or maybe he could go invisible? He might even be able to turn into a bat - right now that was seeming preferable to being this woman.
