Chapter #3

An elf maiden

    by: Descole Author IconMail Icon
When death crashed into Jonathan, he felt a pain close to madness: it was as if all the cognitive information in his brain had been broken and was now wandering through his mind without coherence or direction. A huge tornado of unconnected sensations shook his head, making him unable to think. His inner voice cracked under this existential nonsense, making him forget his own self for a moment.

Therefore, when he suddenly felt the most comforting breeze he had felt in years, he was so surprised that he spent minutes without knowing how to react.

The cold wind beat against his skin steadily and loudly, like the waves of the sea crashing against the shore. He could feel each speck of wind spreading through his body like a liquid before disappearing forever, like a poison with immediate effect. However, it wasn't an unpleasant or distressing feeling: he could even enjoy how the wind pushed his hair, like it wanted to caress it. The incessant whispers of the night filtered through his ears, and his back was leaning against something soft and damp, like some kind of bed manufactured by nature itself. He was so calm and at peace that, hadn't he remembered he was supposed to be dead, he would have spent hours without questioning the situation.

He wasn't sure when he got up, and he certainly didn't know exactly what he was thinking as he did. He was acting on instinct, guided only by confusion and survival instinct. He quickly realized that something was terribly wrong as soon as he discovered that for some reason he had been sleeping in the middle of a forest, but those thoughts were immediately drowned out when Jonathan found the most perfect work of art he had seen in his entire life.

All of her skin gleamed with a ghostly glow in the moonlight, and her lips were so small and delicate that looked like rose petals. Her hair was in some middle point between silver and white and trailed down her neck, giving her the appearance of a princess. And her eyes...

Her eyes were the most beautiful jewels he had ever seen. They were so bright that they seemed to have their own light. They were like two green fireflies, constantly flashing in the darkness, fixed on a perfectly structured face. They were perfectly measured, and their emerald green hue was so immense and powerful that they looked like a sea in constant movement when the light reflected on them. There was something absolutely hypnotic about them, as if they both had a soul of their own.

As if that weren't enough, the girl seemed to be the same age as him.

Jonathan was unable to determine how long he spent looking at her. He wasn't even sure what had happened just before he saw her. It was as if his soul had escaped from his body and ascended to a higher plane of reality. Before he could realize what he was doing, he began to bring his face closer to hers. The angel blushed, which stirred his heart even more. They were getting closer and closer, until they were only a few centimeters away from joining both in an agreement of happiness, to be a single being for a moment...

A sudden confusion struck Jonathan as he felt a mysterious force suck his head and envelop it. He had to close his eyes out of sheer instinct and back away immediately. After doing so, he noticed that something strange was hugging his neck. When he touched it with his hands, he realized it was hair: hair so soaked it looked as if it had spent weeks under sea.

Jonathan looked in all directions, desperately trying to make sense of what was happening. Suddenly, his foot stepped on a piece of damp earth, which allowed him to notice that there was a tiny stream of water near him.

When he looked at it, he was reunited with the exact same girl from before. She still had her angelic eyes, her immaculate skin and her pink lips. But there was something different about her, something that broke with everything common sense wanted to tell Jonathan: instead of having the reddish expression of a young girl in love, the maiden now had an expression as surprised as if she had just died and resurrected.

The girl in the reflection slowly brought her hands closer to her long ears and pulled them with all the strength her hands gave her.

"AHHHHHH!" Jonathan yelled, unleashing a voice as soft and delicate as a fairy's.

Less than three minutes later, his voice screamed again with all the horror a human soul could possess, but this time not due to physical pain.
