I am a unique individual. That may not sound like a big deal, since everyone is a unique individual. But it's a special achievement in my case, because I wasn't programmed for uniqueness or individuality.
That's right, I said programmed. You see, although I look like everyone else, I didn't come to be in the same way. I'm an android: an artificial person.
This is my story.
******************************
I was activated for the first time on January 21. The first thing I became aware of was a man in a wheelchair, examining me. "Hello," he said. "Do you understand me?"
"Yes," I replied, "I understand you."
"Splendid," he said. "You're doing better than five of your predecessors. I am Dr. Ian Daniels. I am a cyberneticist and a roboticist. You are Experimental Life Simulation Android #15."
A small robot on treads rolled up to him, bringing a bottle. "Thank you, Felix," Dr. Daniels said. "#15, this is Felix. He's a less ambitious project than you are. He speaks in binary, but all he says is R."
Perhaps not the most auspicious start of a story, but it's where mine began.
