Team RWBY was in a slump. The latest lead they had been following, about a cache of “magical artifacts” that Ozpin had seemed very insistent might be somehow useful (even though he didn’t actually know what was there any more than they did), had turned out to be a dud. Well, probably. There had been a few items there that they hadn’t been able to identify yet – they didn’t seem like they’d be anything useful, but currently Ozpin (or Oz, or Oscar, or whoever he was now) was away with Jaune and the others and until he got back to confirm their assessment they couldn’t get rid of any of it, or indeed do much of anything else. Thus it was that the four girls were lounging in a room of their current safe house, trying to think of ways to stay occupied and running low on options. Blake Belladonna had all this on her mind as she sat in what she had deemed to be the most comfortable chair and stared at the object in her lap. It had been found along with the ‘artifacts’ and, despite clearly lacking any magical significance, was ironically the only one that she thought might possibly turn out to be interesting.
It was a book, a dusty old one. On the worn-looking front cover (it had no dust jacket) were the words, Wondrous Tales to Thrill and Inspire. No author was listed. It had been idle curiosity that had originally drawn her to the book, but something to read was something to read, and Blake felt reasonably confident that she could distract herself from the boredom of their current situation for a few hours at the absolute least. She opened the book and was greeted by the smell of an entire library. Blake smiled to herself. She didn’t really think of herself as a ‘book nerd’, but there was no denying that she found a special little pleasure in the smell of old books. She looked down at the first page, a table of contents. It seemed that this was an anthology of short stories, seemingly drawn from a variety of genres. She read:
- The Saga of the Stars
- Tales of the Old Frontier
- Romance of the Knight and Princess
- The Lives of the Jungle Beasts
…among others. She paused for a moment, deliberating on which story she felt most like starting right now.
