Chapter #6

Cosmic scale giants

    by: Kilbil Author IconMail Icon
With the advent of giants, much ado has been made about the trials and tribulations society had to make to adjust to their presence. With greater sizes came greater needs that society as a whole was far from prepared to take on, and inevitably, there came trouble from those who suddenly realized just how much more power they had over the world. Many great wars were fought over them, as nations launched massive campaigns against one another in a race to gather as many resources for themselves as possible. More than a few giants had severed their allegiance to any nation and decided to intervene on their own terms, either for the sake of world domination, revenge, or simply for a laugh.

Eventually, however, things managed to settle down to a relatively normal state. Though long, arduous trials, mankind had managed to resolve things in such a way that the world was able to return to its prior, tentatively unease peace. Granted, not much had actually changed regarding the situation giants were in. In many ways, their size made them both unparalleled deities and dependent parasites, and many could attest to having been present for a few rampages here and there, usually by jilted lovers eager to take their long-awaited revenge on the world for their suffering. In spite of the difficulties, however, life went on relatively smoothly. Kids played outside in the summers, grandparents dotted over them, and all in all everything had managed to continue out as normal as it was before.

It was when a few giants started to rival the moon and beyond that things began to really get out of hand, though.

By what had to be either fortune or the grace of God, the planet had managed to avoid its seemingly inevitable destruction as they grew to the point of generating their own gravitational fields. It was of little comfort to those that remained earthbound, however, as their skies quickly grew to be dominated by varying shades of pink and brown intermingling with the light blue haze of the atmosphere. Whether it was a mother of two stopping her son from attempting to eat the moon, or a group of teens daring to sit on top of Venus for five minutes, there was no end to the madness. The solar system had become little more than a playground for these cosmic-scale behemoths, who lived unbound to any human restrictions or boundaries. It was a miracle that Earth hadn't been eviscerated beyond all repair even accidentally by the fickle whims of these makeshift deities, but then again, a lot of events lately had felt like the acts of a capricious trickster god.

You would think that these beings, far beyond the realm of mortal compression and having free reign in the realm of the Gods, would be a source of never-ending existential dread for the poor inhabitants of Earth. Certainly, knowing that any moment, the planet could inadvertently become a satellite to one brat's toe, or a woman's spit could end up drowning it instead, had to be taxing to one's mental health.

And indeed, they were, but these cosmic-scale giants had become an everyday reality for everyone. Besides, it wasn't like there was anything that could be done about it - humanity had yet to invent weapons. Eventually, the unbridled horror and rapturous prayer that had consumed most had faded away, the dread lingering in the background only as a quiet murmur as most went back to their daily routines.

It was what it was. Besides, there were advantages that came from having members of your species that could rival the cosmos in scape. It was pretty easy for the gentler cosmic giants to do some impromptu geoengineering, for starters, bringing forth rains from the mildest of breaths. More crucially, the space programs of the world had finally managed to gain a significant foothold in establishing colonies on other planets, as they were able to use the giants' bodies as crucial waypoints to more distant corners in far shorter amounts of time than would be allowed otherwise. Humanity's future as a space-faring race seemed, for once in their short, short existences, an actual, tangible reality that was just within their reach.

All in all, whether you were still bound to the planet's gravity, a potential rival to her majesty, or even a being that she revolved around herself, life still moved on. After all, everything was still perfectly normal here, wasn't it.

Now, which demographic would you like to focus on?

You have the following choices:

1. Kids

2. Teens

3. Adults

*Noteb*
4. Normal, earthbound people and "tiny" giants

*Noteb*
5. More

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
