This choice: Mako suddenly feels a tingling sensation - was he growing again?  •  Go Back...
Chapter #7

Far Too Late

    by: Kilbil Author IconMail Icon
Time continued to pass, and Mako began to get more lethargic, borderline slumping against Mt. Fuji before abruptly snapping himself back to attention. Odd; even though it was the middle of the day, the titanic boy felt as though he'd stayed up for at least two nights in a row. Did it happen to have something to do with his newfound height? It would make sense: bigger bodies require more energy in order to function properly, so it would naturally follow that he would need more sleep just to conserve it all properly.

Maybe he shouldn't have wandered all the way from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji if that was the case, then. At the moment, though, in his semi-conscious haze, he couldn't quite bring himself to care.

It did feel nice, just letting his mind wander on the edge of unconsciousness. Maybe he could afford taking a nap, just for a little while longer. If someone happened to show up to kill him in that time, he was certain they would be able to wake him up if they were worth his time.

Just as Mako was getting comfortable in his makeshift throne, his attention idly turning towards the little tufts of white above that seemed to be just about within his reach, a tingling sensation suddenly snapped him back into reality. Now fully alert, the giga-giant checked around himself. Though his back was getting a bit cramped from lying down on jagged rock for what felt like... 30 minutes, there was nothing to indicate that anything substantially different had occurred. Maybe his blue briefs had started getting chaffed from having bee worn into the rock, but otherwise, nothing. Perhaps it was getting about time for him to take a different position...

Before Mako could do that, though, the tingling sensation returned with full force, only this time it was persistent and covering his entire body. With that tingling came a suddenly, inexplicable tightness around his calves and hips, his now-expanding body waging mortal combat against Mako's mountain throne. Bit by bit, his titanic rear wore away at the mountain, massive, jagged cracks forming all across it that grew with each passing second. Against the unrelenting squeeze, Mt. Fuji eventually could take no more, and collapsed completely into a pile of rubble, leaving a very confused Mako sitting amidst the ruins, watching the clouds gather around his nose.

With nothing to stop its unrelenting match, Mako's rear tore through the surrounding forests without hesitation. It wasn't even much of a forest at this point, but more of a very thin layer of slightly fuzzy green, like someone had decided to smear the ground with lichen. Whatever villages and towns happened to be in the way of the expanding tide of blue had absolutely no chance; they were simply snuffed out, their cultures and histories crushed beneath his rear with all the effort it would take to discard a cigarette.

The greatest casualty of Mako's growth by far was the nearby city of Fujinomiya. Without any sign of mercy, the overbearingly soft weight of blue fabric tore through the city like it was made of copy paper, countless buildings ending out tangled in the threads or crushed beneath extremely humid flesh. The sounds of splintering wood and shattered glass were all that people as they ran futility for their lives, the roads congesting with cars even as they were all equally smothered beneath the tide of unending skin. Scores upon scores of skyscrapers didn't even shatter beneath the weight; they simply popped like the overheated filament of a lightbulb, giving out before they even had a chance to struggle for their lives. If a building or structure weren't reduced to paste by Mako's thigh, they were gradually getting worn down by the overbearing humidity and nauseating stench of his body odor until, inevitably, they collapsed, the dizzying aroma claiming them and granting them a merciful death as they were unconsciously crushed like the rest. Glass mixed with gore in perfect harmony, searing metal fusing with concrete in a , all compressed together in one harmonious, broken

On and on did Mako's growth go without reprive, the clouds desending to his chest, and then his naval, and then his hips. At a certain point, the boy found himself halfway-wondering if he would grow big enough to match Japan itself. The sensation of cool meeting against his heels certainly confirmed that he had far grown beyond the confines of this current island.

Eventually though, just as abruptly as it began, Mako's sudden growth spurt stopped, leaving him with the clouds lingering around his thighs, and the curvature of the earth noticeably more distinct that should even be possible for a regular kid like him. Without so much as even moving, Mako had rendered a decent chunk of Honshu uninhabitable. If Godzilla was an insect before, now he was nothing more than a speck, an insignificant germ that he couldn't hope to perceive even if he tried.

And Tokyo was just right there, having somehow managed to survive. It was a tiny little grape of a city, just right beneath the shadow his groin was casting.

Somewhere off the corner of his eye, he could just make out a series of what looked like back dots heading towards his right foot. Oh. It looked like the world had responded after all; far too late for it to matter.

He simply flexed his big toe, and they all disappeared from his sight, the mild sensation of heat against his toenail being the only sign there had ever been anything at all. How pitiful.

Somebody. Anybody. Release him from this boredom.

Please. somebody

he didn't want to be all alone.

Mako didn't know how long he'd been sitting here, looking out towards nothing in particular in the horizon. There had been a few more attempts to deal with him. At least, he thought those were attempts. There were times when tiny spots would feel a bit warmer than usual, then he would shift around for a bit and just like that, they would vanish.

Eventually, there had been a point where those skirmishs had stopped altogether, though it was possible the world was simply regrouping. It had only been around a day or so since he became a miles-spanning menace. Most likely, they were considering their options, primarily whether or not they were going for the nuclear option. He knew that in most monster movies, conventional weapons stood absolutely no chance against the rampaging beast. Even the mighty atom bomb was no match, and in many cases, it only empowered the monster even further. This was real life, though, and he didn't have tough, scaly skin or a body that would withstand radiation, so there was every chance that he would be affected substantially. Most likely, the concern here was the fallout that would, but if there was any time to use them for something other than a perpetual game of tit-for-tat, it was now.

If he was going to even be hurt by it at all, anyway.

Mako couldn't help but laugh to himself. It was pointless for him to speculate. He knew exactly how this would all end: in total failure. How much power he had. He was more than just a mere giant now. He wasn't even simply a force of nature or a natural calamity. He was far greater than that, a true titan that shamed even the mightiest of cities with his toes alone. There was nothing anyone could do to stop him.

Any he absolutely loathed than with all his heart.

There was no chance for him. He couldn't hope for anyone to be able to challenge or accept him. Any cities he came across would simply crumble before he had a chance to even get near them. He was simply far too big. Too big to live along humans, too big to rampage properly, too big, sleep, or eat properly like a dignified human being (oh wait. He wasn't a human anymore, not after the millions he'd ended in his wake). Too big for anything worth living for.

And his home, that he had taken for granted for so long, was now an insignificant little thing beneath his island-spanning body. He could lean forward slightly, and he would accidentally crush half of Tokyo, from Suginami to Katsushika, without feeling a thing. No give, no way; it would just be gone, given the most ignoble, humiliating end imaginable as an insignificant stain beneath his groin.

What kind of fate was this? What did he do to deserve this?

It didn't matter. He couldn't just sit around here and wait until he ended up decomposing, though it was looking like a tempting option with each passing second. He had to do something about this, but what? He had no idea where that magic rock had gone, or if there was any others like it. He didn't even know if it was possible for him to shrink back to a more manageable size.

There were only two real choices that he had: either he tried his best to live in peace with the world, no matter how impossible it was, or he could simply destroy it. It wasn't like he had any other options. Any dreams or hopes he may have had once were completely closed off to him. It may have seemed cruel to close the door to the dreams of countless others like him in response, but as far as Mako figured, it was only a matter of time before he ended up doing that anyway, wither through another growth spurt or otherwise. But perhaps if he tried to make up for what he did, someone would find a way to shrink him down? That would be an option.

Alternatively, he could just lie down here. That was an option too.

Eventually, Mako decided...
