Death Strikes

    by: BeeJay Author IconMail Icon
After I was able to hit the bullseye reliably, Maya came to see me. "Ty's under the weather," she said. "I'm going to need you on today's hunt."

"Alright," I said. "I should be able to avoid shooting anyone by accident."

Kal was part of the hunting party, as was Hector, identifying creatures and checking the plant life. Unfortunately, so was the spoiled rich girl, still determined to find vegan options. We headed out of the cave (which was now marked by a CLE carved over the entrance), waving goodbye.

One of us wouldn't make it back.

******************************

The hunt was pretty good. I was able to take down a small dinosaur, which Hector identified as a young Edmontosaurus. "Should be good eating," he said.

"These will be better," the rich girl said. She held up a bunch of berries. "Who wants some?"

"Where did you find those?" Hector asked.

"On that bush over there," she said. "The stupid dinos aren't even eating them."

"Don't you think there might be a reason? Get rid of them!"

The girl scoffed. "Nature doesn't want to hurt us." She put a handful of berries into her mouth.

"How are they?" I asked.

"Sweet and delicious," she replied. "Whoa, there's a burning."

Hector picked up the remaining berries, and threw them as far as he could. "Some berries are good, but these are poisonous. That's why the dinosaurs aren't eating them."

As if on cue, the girl started throwing up. First came the contents of her stomach; after that, she started puking blood.

Hector shook his head. "We don't have a hospital to take her to."

The girl lost consciousness, blood still pouring out of her mouth.

"Is there anything we can do for her?"

Maya shook her head. "It's acting too quickly. If she is unconscious, at least she won't be in pain."

I held the girl's hand, wanting her to have human contact. I held her hand until it grew cold. She was gone.

******************************

After some discussion, we decided to carry the body back to camp, to dispose of her remains when we were all together.

As we walked, I asked Kal, "How's Ty doing?"

"I dunno," he replied. "It's like he's avoiding me."

"Think it has anything to do with why he smells so sweet?"

Kal stopped. "Sweet?"

"Yeah. You know what it is?"

"Yeah: it's bad."

"Huh?"

"Ty's diabetic. He must have run out of insulin."

"What can we do for him?"

"Not much; without insulin, he's dying."
