Chapter #5

Teva-04, The Mystery Bot

    by: MightyHalberd Author IconMail Icon
Twilight loomed over 0b-city as the humid haze in the air threatened to turn into a torrential downpour, soaking the neon-tinged buildings of the Juryo District in time for the TechGangs and Splatterpunks to take over the night. Enforcers patrolled the streets preparing for their arrival as the magtrains rushed overhead, and as the tacky neon signage of the storefronts started lighting up, two figures in their plain work uniforms were peering through the window of the hoverbike garage.

"I love that sporty emerald-colored one," the one with the shock of vermillion hair said. "What do you think Teva?"

Teva-04 thought for a moment, her electric blue eyes dancing across the LCD screen above her nose as she considered her options. "What about that jet black and chrome bike on the end?" she said after a while, her sight lingering on the fancy looking vehicle.

Her friend Skyler let out a low whistle. "That's an attractive looking machine. What's that model, an Ozeki?"

Teva straightened up as her servos whirred softly. "Ozeki model hoverbike designed by YokoCorp Flyertech, 120-Vox engine with gyro-stable transmission, streamlined battery casing and ergonomic grip modifications indicative of third variant..."

Skyler watched with wide-eyed admiration until her robot bestie finished rattling off the parameters of the vehicle. "That is SO cool how you can do that."

"I-I'm sure it's nothing special," Teva murmured, twiddling her thumbs awkwardly. "I bet lots of bots can do the same thing."

"Not the kind that work where we do, I can tell you that much," Skyler grinned, checking the readout on her wristband. "Speaking of which, we'd better get going or we're gonna be late."

The pair quickly rushed to the hoverbus as it gently floated by before picking up speed and zooming down the road. Finding a rail to hold on to, Teva watched the streets go by, data fluttering through her head from the bits and pieces she could observe. The hoverbus slowed for a moment, and a couple splatterpunks hopped the door, dancing along to the discordant electro-funk playing from one of their members. Moving to their own spots, one of the greasier looking punks with nasty looking dreads caught sight of Teva and scooched closer to her, leering at her with his one good eye. "Tasty 'lil hunka synthmeat..." he rasped at her, rolling his tongue around in his mouth.

Teva froze as something in her head clicked, and she became aware she was 'targeting' the gross looking splatterpunk with...something? Before anything could happen though, the much taller Skyler stepped between them, fixing the punk with her trademark death stare. The punk quickly backed down, muttering something derogatory about the two before slinking away. "Thanks..." Teva mumbled.

"Don't mention it," Skyler said. "And don't be afraid to find me if any of the sleazeballs at work give you a hard time, mkay?" She pulled the robot into a friendly side-hug that gave Teva the comfy feeling of affection. She didn't have long to relish it as the bus slowed down again and the two hopped out the door, landing right outside their workplace, just as the neon sign of the Greasy Gear blinked to life.
