Chapter #3Two Weeks Later by: BeeJay Two weeks after that date, Sid invited me over for a late-night video game session. Fine by me: I love video games. My folks said it was okay, too, since it was a Friday night and Saturday morning. I packed the few things I'd need for overnight, and Sid picked me up.
We started playing after I settled in, and the game was going well. Except I was getting distracted by this funny smell. I couldn't figure out what it was; all I knew was that it stank, and it was in the room with us.
Finally, I asked Sid, "Dude, what reeks?"
He sniffed. "I don't smell anything."
How could he miss that stench? "Well, I can smell it, and it's awful."
Before bed, I finally traced the smell to his hamper. I made him set it outside the room for the night; then, he climbed into his bed, I got into my sleeping bag, and we fell asleep.
******************************
The next morning, I woke up first, and I shuffled into the hall bathroom. Taking a moment to check out a drawer, I saw a home pregnancy test. What the hell, I thought; I opened the box, peed on the stick, and left it on the sink, forgetting about it once I was out of the bathroom.
I was getting dressed, looking forward to whatever Mrs. Ascher was making for breakfast, when angry voices reached my ears. Stepping into the hall, I saw Mrs. Ascher yelling at his younger sister. "I want you to tell me his name, young lady," Mrs. Ascher said, "and I want you to tell me now!"
"Mom," the girl replied, "I haven't done anything like that!"
"Oh, you haven't, have you? I suppose that this was left by elves?" She held up the test.
I didn't want Sid's kid sister to get in trouble on my account, so I stepped forward. "That's mine, Mrs. Ascher."
Both turned to look at me. "Yours?"
"Yeah. I found it this morning, and I used it, y'know, for shi... for a joke."
Mrs. Ascher turned to look me straight in the eye. "You used this?"
"Yeah. I'm sorry if I got you so upset, ma'am. It was just a joke; I didn't want you yelling at your daughter over it."
She stopped yelling, but she was still concerned about something. "Young man," she said, handing me the test, "you need to talk to your doctor."
"Huh?" But she was already headed downstairs.
I looked at the test, and realized that it was done. And the display window had one word on its digital readout:
Pregnant indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
