I sighed. "I'm taking part in an experiment," I replied. "They're paying $25,000."
"I suppose that would help pay your way," Mom said. "What would you be doing in this experiment?"
"Well, it's a pretty unusual experiment: They're trying to make hypoallergenic pets."
"Well, that sounds like a worthwhile endeavor," my stepdad said. "But you're not allergic; how could you help them test whether it works?"
"Well, that's the unusual part: I would be helping them... by gestating them."
"Gestating? Carole Anne, what in the world are you talking about?"
"That's the experiment: To make the puppies hypoallergenic, they would be gestated in a human womb. In this case, my human womb."
"Your womb? Honey, you're talking about getting pregnant with... with puppies."
"I know. After all, it's my body. And it's their cash moolah. And, if the way to their money is with my uterus, then that's what I'm going to have to do."
"Are you sure about this, honey?" Mom asked.
"I think so, Mom."
"Alright, then. I'm with you."
"So am I," my stepdad said.
"Thanks. That means a lot to me."
So that was it. It was decided.
In the morning, I called the company, getting everything set up.
