Chapter #4The Procedure by: BeeJay After a month of injections and oral medication, it was finally time for the procedure. Mom drove me to Brightford, just in case I didn't feel up to driving myself home. I checked in at the desk, and waited.
When I was called in, the nurse took me to an exam room. "Is this where they're going to do it?" I asked.
"No," she replied, "that will be done in a different room. This is just where you'll get ready. First, let's make sure you're healthy."
As with any other doctor visit in my life, the nurse took my temperature and checked my blood pressure. Then, she asked me routine questions about how I was feeling.
When she was finished with her questions, she said, "Alright. Everything looks good. Let's get you ready." She took out two hospital gowns. "Strip down completely. Put one of these on and tie it in the back; then, put on the other the other way around, as kind of a robe. That way, we can preserve your dignity." With that, she left the room.
I got naked, then put on the gowns as instructed.
A couple minutes later, there was a knock on the door, and the nurse came back. "All set?" she asked. "Good; come right this way."
I followed her down the hall to a door. She opened it, and we walked into a large, clean room, with a table just like at my last gynecological exam. "Welcome, Carole Anne," said a woman Mom's age, dressed in surgical scrubs. "I'm Dr. Long; I'll be handling the procedure. And, if things work out, I'll be monitoring your condition for the duration of your pregnancy. All set to go?"
I nodded. "Let's do this."
"Splendid. The nurse will help you onto the table and into position."
Once I was where I needed to be, I asked, "How are we doing this, exactly?"
"I have here a set of eight Cocker Spaniel embryos, created here in the lab. We're going to implant all eight, to increase the likelihood of successful implantation. After the procedure, we'll give you some alone time; you should lie quietly, with your legs up, to increase your chances. After that, we'll bring you back to where you left your things, and you can go home."
"Sounds good. What should I be looking for?"
"If we're successful, in a couple of weeks, you'll notice some slight weight gain; nothing major, but enough that your diet and exercise shouldn't account for it. If all goes well, you'll give birth in roughly 63 days."
"That soon?"
"A dog pregnancy is shorter than a human pregnancy. You won't be really showing until halfway through your fifth week; after that, you'll get big quickly."
"Well, that sounds good. Whenever you're ready, Doctor."
She stood up. "I've been implanting them while we've been speaking. We're all done." And they left.
Later, I got dressed, and rejoined Mom. "How'd it go?" she asked.
"It was over before I knew it," I replied. "Now, we go home, and we wait."
