Chapter #5The Big Epidemic by: BeeJay There's a new disease going around, and it's a weird one. It's nothing like any other disease out there.
If you're a guy, you won't get it. I don't know why, they're just immune.
If you're an adult, you won't get it. You might be a carrier, but you're immune.
If you're a kid, it looks like you're immune. Maybe you'll pick it up when you're old enough, I don't know.
But if you're a teenage girl, and you get exposed to it,... there just might be big things in your future.
My name is Erika Ward, and this is my story.
******************************
It was the first day of summer vacation when it happened. Later on, I planned to go hang out by the pool with my friends; that morning, though, I was watching TV. As I sat watching, my feet started tingling for some reason, so I rubbed them as I watched.
A crazy story came on the news. "For our next story, we want to assure you that no camera tricks or special effects were used. What you are about to see, amazing as it may seem, is real."
The news show then cut to the story, and it was clear why they started with that disclaimer. On the screen was a girl about my age. She could easily have been one of my friends. There was one thing different about her, though: She was huge.
"This is Tiffany Fairchild," the reporter said. "She may look like any girl you might know. With one exception: She is over seven feet tall. And, believe it or not, she's still growing."
"I'm growing by an eighth of an inch every hour," Tiffany said. "It works out to three inches a day."
Needless to say, her story was interesting, more so when I found out that she lived in the same city as I did. She and I could have known each other.
"Do you know how this started?" the reporter asked.
"Well," she replied, "we were able to figure out when I started growing. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Well, except for one thing: For some reason, my feet were really tingly that day."
I looked at my feet.
Then I grabbed Mom by the arm. "What is it, Erika?" Mom asked.
"Mom, she said she started growing like that after her feet started tingling. My feet are tingling right now!"
"Oh, don't be silly," she said. "You're nothing like her! Just go about your day, and you'll forget all about this."
She tried to convince me. I played along; but, the whole time I was sunbathing, I couldn't shake the feeling that my bikini was too small for me.

The next morning, absolutely nothing fit me. And, just to underline the point, I was now taller than Mom. No doubt about it: I was growing. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
