Chapter #6

Nightwing - Ultraman, Man of No Tomorrow

Before Bruce could attempt to calm his young ward, they both paused. A familiar thud smacked down outside. Bruce knew that noise anywhere: Superman touching down after a flight. He always landed with such grace and finesse despite moving fast enough to leave Earth's orbit. The sound of his friend arriving usually gave him comfort, though he'd never admit it. However, this feeling was different. The sound was different. Similar, but not the same. The force, the impact of the landing was stronger. Less controlled, less refined, less careful. Bruce wasn't afraid of anything, but the thought of facing a rogue Superman made him uneasy.

"Is that...?"

Dick whispered in her borrowed voice.

Bruce nodded silently.

Suddenly, the doors to the room the two were in burst open.

"Well if it isn't my two favorite people. The bird and the broad!"

None other than Ultraman strutted through the door. His costume similar to Superman's in every way except for a few key differences. The universally recognizable "S" had been replaced with a "U", what it stood for Bruce could probably guess. This version of Clark looked just like the one he knew except Ultraman had his hair slicked back and he had a thick east coast accent.

Dick froze when she saw him. She looked up to Superman. It was Superman's old stories of heroism from Krypton which is where she got the idea for the name Nightwing. This wasn't him. This was a selfish, evil, and twisted version of the man they all revered to back home.

"There something in my teeth? What? You both got a fuckin' starin' problem or somethin'?"

Ultraman folded his arms.

Bruce decided to act as natural as possible and went back to typing on the computer, giving a dismissive answer to the alien.

"Not at all, Clark."

"Clark!?"

Ultraman grabbed Bruce by the shoulder and turned him around forcibly.

"Who the fuck are you callin' Clark? Nobody's called me that since..." he shoved "Owlman" into the computer terminal, causing a sizable dent. He pointed at Bruce angrily, making a both frustrated and confused expression. Bruce realized how screwed he would be if Ultraman knew that his two right hands were possessed by heroes from an alternate reality. He'd also have virtually no way of defeating him since he didn't know all of Owlman's tricks for stopping him, which undoubtedly existed. If Owlman was anything like Batman, he had contingencies for his contingencies, whether they were made in good faith or not.

"Err.... hey... uh... darling..." Dick saw her mentor in trouble and decided to intervene. She was engaged to this walking brick wall. That meant he was attracted to her, or at least the woman he thought Dick was. God this was confusing. Maybe she could use that as leverage?

"I'm sure he didn't mean it. Just having an off day is all, y'know? Guy sits in the shadows all day. He probably just needs some sunlight..." she hesitantly put her hand on Ultraman's shoulder. The touch got his attention.

"Yeah? You're probably right..." Ultraman eased up slightly, lifting Bruce back up to his feet.

"Tommyboy here is too valuable to kill anyway," he calmed down.

"Kal is my name. Kal. And don't you forget it. Next time Donna might not be here to rescue your ass, you got me?"

"Of course... Kal...."

Did he just call her Donna? As in Donna Troy? What happened to this earth's Diana?

"That's more like it. Anyways..."

Ultraman pulled Dick in close by her waist and without warning pressed his lips against hers. Dick could see Bruce, making a face of distress but he shook his head at her. There was nothing he could do for her, she just had to go along with it for the time being. She relaxed a little, just trying to imagine she was kissing Starfire or something. It wasn't her first time being affectionate with an alien that was stronger than her, she'd just never done it with the genders reversed. Ultraman's breath also smelled like he had been drinking.

Weren't kryptonians immune to alcohol?

"God I missed you."

Ultraman broke the kiss and smiled at his fiancé.

"Er... I missed you too."

Dick feebly tried to continue to play the role of Superwoman.

"Something wrong? You're acting... kinda funny..."

"Me? No... I'm just...." she looked passed Ultraman to the computer screen Bruce was using. He pulled up an image of that world's Justice League. Oddly enough, it was comprised of people that she knew to be villains in her home universe.

"I'm just sick and tired of those dumb do-gooders ruining our fun..." she tried her best to sound like a stuck up queen.

"Ah. That's what's bugging you, doll? Those clowns? Forget about it! The Loser League is in shambles. Nobody's seen Alexander or the Jester in months. President Wilson is wrapped around my finger. Tommy's got Gotham under his thumb, Sea King has the world's oceans, Power Ring's got the skies, you have your island of hot broads, and nothing happens in Metropolis without my say so. We're set!"

Ultraman's attempts to reassure her that everything was okay had the opposite effect on her internally though on the outside she looked relieved. The villains really did have the world at their mercy on this earth. It saddened her a little. Surely when her and Bruce found a way back home, they'd figure out a way to return later with backup. They couldn't just leave this earth behind to be ruled by malevolent dictators, could they?

What happens next?
