His hand touches the doorhandle, when his brain registers the snoring. It's strange. Stan isn't a snorer usually is his first thought. But then he has another one. Stan wasn't here yesterday evening. Maybe he came back late?
He looks back to check the bed. Now that he's fully awake, he's aware that someone's been snoring the whole time. Sure enough, someone's sleeping in Stan's bed, half-hugging, half wrapped in his blanket, back turned to Richard, a wave of long hair covering Stan's pillow. Long hair. And Stan's is almost bald. That is not Stan in his bed.
Upon closer inspection, Richard realizes that that someone is probably a girl. And, piecing together her body coming in and out from under the blanket, one leg stretched out uncovered, one arm resting under her face, part of her back where the blanket has slid off - he also has to conclude that the girl is either naked, or wearing very little.
Then the snoring stops. The girl starts moving, her arms stretching out. Then her head turns toward Richard. She quickly pulls the blanket to her chin, and sits upin the bed. Richard, totally dumbfounded, recognizes that the girl sleeping alone in his roommate's bed is
