Chapter #5

Cut From The Team

Quinn's phone buzzed, interrupting the silence of her room. She glanced at the screen, expecting a text from her best friend, Lena. Instead, she saw an email from Coach Harris. Her heart sank as she read the subject line: "Team Roster Update." The email was short, painfully so. "Due to recent changes in team dynamics and the need for a new direction, I regret to inform you that your position on the volleyball team has been filled by another player." It was a blow, but not entirely unexpected.

The last few weeks had been a tense game of politics on and off the court. Emily, the new captain, had made it clear that she didn't think Quinn was a good fit anymore. Her tactics were subtle but effective: spreading rumors, leaving Quinn out of group chats, and always finding fault with her plays during practice. Quinn had felt the walls closing in on her, but she had held onto hope that her skills and dedication would win out in the end. Now, with the cold, digital words staring back at her, she realized that hope had been in vain.

Tears blurred Quinn's vision as she reread the email, hoping she had misunderstood. Her chest tightened, and she could feel the weight of disappointment settling in her stomach. Volleyball had been her sanctuary, a place where she could forget about school pressures and just focus on the thrill of the game. The gym floor, the smell of sweat and rubber, the satisfying thwack of the ball against her palms—it all now felt so far away. She had put so much of herself into the team, and it had become a part of her identity. Without it, she didn't know who she was anymore.

Her legs moved almost of their own accord, carrying her downstairs to the kitchen. The fridge beckoned, but she knew that healthy food wouldn't fill the void she felt. Instead, she turned to the pantry, her hand reaching for the comfort of something processed and sugary. She grabbed a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels and a pint of mint chocolate chip ice cream. The cool metal of the freezer handle contrasted sharply with the heat of anger and sadness burning through her.

Back in her room, Quinn sat cross-legged on her bed, the treasure of junk food spread before her. The pretzels crunched in her mouth, each bite a silent rebellion against the strict diet she had maintained for the team. The ice cream melted on her tongue, a sweet lie telling her everything would be okay. She shoveled spoonful after spoonful into her mouth, feeling the chill run down her throat and the sweetness flood her senses. It was a temporary escape, a sugary embrace that didn't ask for anything in return.

When the last of the pretzels and ice cream were gone, she lay back on her bed, her stomach distended and uncomfortable. She rubbed her bloated belly, feeling the fullness press against her ribs. It was a strange, unfamiliar sensation after so many months of counting calories and pushing herself to be lighter, faster, better for the team. Now, all that effort felt wasted. Her mind swirled with thoughts of what her future held without volleyball. Would she lose her friends? Would she find something else to fill the gaping hole in her life?

Quinn's eyelids grew heavy as the sugar rush gave way to fatigue. She closed her eyes, letting the darkness wash over her. The room grew quiet except for the distant hum of the AC and the occasional creak of the floorboards. Her thoughts grew hazy, and she drifted into a fitful sleep, her dreams plagued by images of Emily's smug smile and the echo of the gym floor without her sneakers squeaking against it.
