I place an apple on the table and turn a couple of dials on the electromagnetic inverter. The device is rectangular with a small satellite attached to the end. It is about the length of a smart phone and as thick as two. A ray of red light shoots out and hits the apple. I watch as it begins to get smaller before my eyes, shrinking down to the size of a strawberry. Carefully I examine it and write some notes down. After poking, prodding, and gathering more data, I begin shrinking more apples and subjecting them to different tests such as pressure and chemicals. With the last apple I shrunk, I change some settings on the inverter and successful return it to normal size.
Just as I finish the door swings open and my grandpa walks in. "How'd the tests go?" Grandpa Joe is the senior scientist at EmEx Labs.
"Well, I think we finally have worked out most of the kinks. The cellular structure seems to be holding so the apples aren't wilting anymore. Also your hypothesis was right. The increase in cellular density caused by the shrinking process also increases the durability. The apples were able to handle much more weight than they should have been able to and chemicals did not seem to harm them. I still running tests so we will see if anything comes up."
"Wonderful," my grandpa say rubbing his gray mustache. "I think it is safe to take the testing to the next level." He walks to the other end of the room and reaches in to a cage, producing a mouse. "Come here my brave little friend. If all goes well you will be back to normal in no time." Grandpa Joe places the rodent on table and grabs the inverter from me. After turning the dials he presses the button.
I watch carefully for any signs of pain in the mouse as he shrinks, but there was no indication of discomfort. In fact the procedure seemed to relax him. My grandpa returns the mouse to normal size with similar results. "Well everything seems in order and it seems pretty safe, but I want to run more test latter. Why don't you go home?"
"Sounds good," I say as I remove my lab coat and grab my bag.
Just then a voice sounds from the hallway. "Joe are you in there, we need to talk." I recognize the voice as Alexander Reynolds, the owner of the lab. He and my grandpa have never got along. Alexander is all about profit, while my grandpa was just interested in making scientific discoveries.
"Damn, he can't see the inversion ray. He has plans to sell it to the military as a weapon." Grandpa Joe shoves the device into my bag before the door opens. Alexander walks in without even acknowledging me, wearing his expensive suit.
"So hows the progress on the shrinking ray going?" Alexander looks at Joe like he was scum.
"I've told you it's not a shrink ray, it's called an electromagnetic inverter." My grandpa grumbles with impatience. "And not good. We can't seem to produce a strong enough field to keep the cells bonded. But we're working on it."
I decide to leave before the two men get into a heated argument. As I round the conner on my way out I hear Alexander say, "You better."
