Melona wasn't surprised by the audible increase in gossip and whispers as she entered the cafeteria. Every time she made some sort of mistake this would happen, and this time she had even visibly changed. She quietly got her food and found a place to sit by herself. People were always talking about her and her family. But when they talked about her father they would talk about his achievements, and when they talked about her mom that would go on about her beauty. Melona had heard once that "all attention is good attention," but personally if they didn't like her, she would prefer they just ignore her.
A thought popped into her head at this. What would it be like to be praised? If all the murmurs when she entered a room were out of admiration instead of derision? She listened in to the voices talking behind her, her mind twisting their taunts into praise.
"God, Melona is such a hottie."
"I know, right? What is she even doing tonight?"
"I can stand her!"
A light smile teased at the corners of her mouth. Hearing praise, even hypothetical praise, made her feel warm and happy, as something stirred inside of her. She couldn't even imagine how amazing she would feel if their praise was real...
"Melona?"
The girl blinked, her blush deepening as she looked up to see...
