"I... I don't think I'm cut out to be a witch..."

"Oh..? And what makes you say that?" Skullus said calmly, and before Melona knew it she had told the professor everything, about her family, about her lifelong struggles with magic, the inferiority she felt at all times from all of her failures, everything. Skullus was surprisingly calm, listening quietly, only interrupting to ask a few follow-up questions every here and there. When Melona was finished Skullus leaned in, reaching under her hat to stroke her hair. Her hands were cold and clammy, but the gesture was still reassuring.

"Do you know how often people have said the same to me?" Skullus asked. Melona shook her head. "Every day. Centuries have passed since Necromancy was outlawed and still people think of it as evil. But I don't care. There's only one person who should never say that to you."

"Who?"

"You." Skullus said, crouching down to meet Melona at eye level, "You're the only person who can control your fate. If someone gives up on you, you can still succeed. But if you give up on you, it's all over."

Melona blinked, her eyes stinging. She was... crying...?

"Ms. Pearsly...?"

"S-sorry, I'm fine, I..." Melona wiped her face, "I guess I was just surprised... No one's ever said that to me..."

"I am sorry to hear that..." Skullus said, looking genuinely heartbroken, "You are my hardest working student. You deserve to be recognized for your efforts."

"Th-thank you..." Melona stuttered, not knowing how else to respond, not used to this level of kindness.

"It looks like class is starting soon." Skullus said, looking at the clock on the wall, "But if you don't have any other classes next, you're free to stay after, and perhaps we can figure out why your magic hasn't been working."

"Okay..."

Skullus pulled Melona into a hug, and Melona hugged back, squeezing tight even as the professor's massive chest made breathing difficult.

"Thank you..."

You have the following choices:

1. Melona stays after class

*Noteb*
2. Melona cannot stay after class, Skullus investigates on her own

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
